500m reduced loads 30-06

Post by Oldgunfan » 01 Dec 2023, 4:10 am

I’ve had my fun with trailboss loads and 230gn coated lead turning my 30-06 K98 sporter into a 300bo .. now I want to hit gongs at 500m .. going to borrow the 1-4 lpvo that’s on my 22 as I already have it as well as AR2206H that I’ve used for “intermediate loads” .. not interested in severe recoil just to hit a gong .. would a 2200ish fps load with 175smks perform well enough ? I know it’s basically 30-30 ballistics but can’t imagine why it wouldn’t work ??

Depends just how big your plate is don’t it. If it’s a 2moa plate, you’ll need to work toward accuracy and consistency. There’s a bit of a saying “accuracy is king, speed is prince”.
At what point does lack of maintenance become patina?

At the range I visit they have what looks like a 2moa plate next to torso sized plates .. considering it’s a sporter Mauser with a 1-4 I’d be more inclined to go for the large plate

Is it a 1:10 twist

It is 1:10 twist .. happily stabilizes loooong 230gn cast lead as well as gas checked stumpy 168gn “silhouette” bullets that are shorter than 150gn fmj

You should be fine and you can check on the berger Stability calculator

Interestingly, the human body has a BC of .6
While the stability calculator will accept my height and girth, unfortunately the calculator won't accept 1,543,325 grains as a weight value.

Yes, a 2200fps load with a high-BC bullet will work just fine. Accuracy will be far more important than velocity, though velocity will help significantly if it's windy.
