Northern Smelters

Post by yoshie » 21 Mar 2024, 7:18 pm

So I've run out of lead for casting and Northern Smelters has closed/under new ownership. I gave then a call today and they were happy to post me some from NSW. Does anyone in SEQ know where we can source lead for casting? https://www.northernsmelters.com.au/

If your feeling lazy and CBF shopping around It can be gad on Ebay for $10 / kg + postage
Pretty expensive for lead but it's easy.

Scrap yards sell it for a little over scrap value but it's typically dirty and the purity isn't assured.

What was Northern Smelters charging ?

I've heard that's a common practice.

There are still the tyre joints.
But a lot of zinc ww now.

I haven't got a quote yet but factoring in freight it's not going to be cost effective. I have a couple of good molds and I was really liking their Hard ball mix. I'll as for a quote today and update.

The last bucket of wheel weights I got from the tyre shop next to my day job was a little less than 50% lead weights and some that was the steel clips from the clip on ones. The rest of the weights were steel, zinc, aluminium and plastic.
Nearly at point of not worth the time to sort wheel weights now.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

Just keep an eye out for scrap flashing, scuba weights and fishing sinkers on Facebook. It does the rounds. I've seen people give it away for free :)

Maybe you were reading the weight per square metre?
Bunnings 9kg for $93.50.
