large pistol magnum primers in rifles

Hi gents I know there are differences between rifle and pistol primers thickness, toughness and brisance but wondered how the above might go if I run out of large rifle primers. Referring to large pistol magnum primers btw, not just regular large pistol..

Hi mate

I have used the Winchester 'Large Pistol primer for standard and magnum loads" (the blue box).
In the following loads

308W with BM2 and 150gr projectile in an Ishapore SMLE
303Br with 2206H and 150/158 grains projectiles in Lee No4 Mk1s.

ZERO incident
Accuracy was OK, those rifles were no Benchrest tools anyway but outcome was largely sufficient for my purpose (military style shooting).

Small pistol primers used in rifles often gets a mention......

Bottom line it pistol primers are designed for pistol pressures. (Lower than rifles)

For very mild loads.....probably ok. Normal loads could get risky. JM2c. But no personal experience.

IMHO, just buy some LRPs.

heavy revolver loads, single shot pistols, freedom arms etc can top 50kPSI , as can a rossi 92 incidentally, without detriment to LPP, so pressure wise Im thinking no probs with 30-30 or 444. Dimensional differences and firing pin piercing primers had me more concerned though.

Thanks for the report Vince24! Good to know

you're welcome
my loads were 40g of BM2 for the Ishapore and 38g of 2206H for the 303.
so not on the heavy side for 150 grain projectiles.

But accuracy was not bad, this is a 10 shot group test at 100m with open sights with the Ishapore:
