About 4 months ago i was given a few cans of old powder. They all seem ok and hope to use them.

Can anyone confirm for me what this powder is?
Hodgden or IMR 3831

Made by Dupont, so guessing IMR.

No mate it's IMR. A tad faster than the hodgden.
I can use it with some 180gr I have.

No mate it's IMR. A tad faster than the hodgden.
I can use it with some 180gr I have.

Being old it's possibly slightly faster, but when Hodgdon bought the IMR range they amalgamated the H and IMR ranges.
I would use it the same as I'd use AA2213SC, load data should be essentially the same.

Yeh, could be. But I'll be cautious.

I did do a simple burn rate test and was slower than the new AR2208 I have.

I'll try 10% under minimum first.

Gotta check how many 180gr I have left. IIRC i have about 120 which will be perfect.

It's NOT sc as the sticks are longer and even the old mulwex 4831was a long cut and being that IMR powders are not an ether based powder be buggered if I would use it.
But you go right ahead powder ain't that hard to get ...... well not around here anyway .
The only rifle powder we don't see here atm are 2206h and bm1

A mate gave me some of that 4831 and also a can of 4895 that his Dad had. Bit of history.
I stashed it in my powder coolers, which are dry and temp constant, and had to move these old cans not so long ago. The base of the 4831 can stayed there and the powder spilled everywhere!
Looking at the can, the powder had corroded right through the steel can from the inside out, couldn't see it from the outside until it let go under its own weight. The lid was tight and the seal intact under the lid. Some evil chemical change had happened over time.
So it, including the 4895, made the grass greener in the farm yard after the last spring rain.

As was sagely previously said, new, perfectly good Aussie stuff is readily available that just mightn't ruin someone's day.

Looks, smells, burns as expected.

But, yes, I'll look inside the can. I don't know how it was stored.

Currently using AS50 that I bought in 1988. It's fine. Just stored in the shed in a locker.

I loaded up a few test rounds in my old Win 30.06 with some 150gr bullets I was given. Brand unknown. At 91 metres. Dot is 1"

Hornady manual says, 56.9gr to 59.1c max Old IMR Manual only gave 59cgr max
Started at:
55 125gr
55 150gr
56 150gr
57 150gr
58 150gr
59,,,did not load.

All cases ejected fine all primers looked normal.
I got the attached group. The hand written powder weights were from memory.

Anyway, I have 60 of those bullets left with enough powder to load about 70.

I'll load them all up at 56 I think and remaining powder on the garden.

They will be fine for close work on fallow, goats, etc.

A bit off subject but that powder rate equivalent chart is somewhat gooned up, as they usually are
WST and Win231 are the wrong way around relative to each other, in fact WST should be up closer to Bullseye and As30N. 700X should be higher on the chart too. A reminder I guess to use them as basic guides only.

I certainly was not aware of those errors. But yes, it's only a guide as you say.
