Bullet alloys ADELAIDE?

Post by andym79 » 01 Jun 2014, 5:10 pm

Hi does anyone get or know where you can get bullet alloys in Adelaide?

I don't mean scrap or wheel weights, rather pure lead, Lyman 2, Hardball or Linotype or at least an alloy of a known composition!

The same sort of service as Northern smelters offer, only without the postage and having to wait for the mail to arrive!

I don't know where in Adelaide you can buy alloys, but I recently asked for prices from a local metal recycling business here in North QLD - for your reference:
Pure lead - Ingot or scrap - $3.80 per kg
Linotype - Ingot or lettering - $5 per kg (14-15%)
Tin - $30 per kg

Cheers

I just picked up a pure lead ingot $4.25KG and some tin $36 KG

A bit more than you have got prices for in Queensland!
The place I went to didn't do Linotype or Hardball!

I don't want to put too much tin in to the mix so without any Antimony I will be limited to around 10 BHN, but that should be fine I guess!

Before I even rang my local recycling depot for linotype prices, I was watching for it on ebay. You can usually find it for around $10-$15 per kg posted from anywhere (even the states). Bit expensive though.
You can also quench any bullets you cast to get a bit more hardness from them (although there are some requirements - arsenic, and Wheel weights have a little, I don't think pure lead will...). Here's a chapter from the LASC website that explains heat treating bullets - Definitely worth a read if you're casting.

In fact, the LASC website as a whole is an invaluable resource for casters!

I was going to say... mailing 10kg of lead can't be cheap
