Post by Billo » 22 Feb 2025, 7:26 pm

So some how Ive ended up with a 20 inch barrel 204 Ruger in the safe, whats the best powder combo for such hilarity and accuracy goodness ?

I have plenty of 32gr Vmax and BTs on hand along with some 40gr Bergers :drinks:

I would use AR2206H regardless of length, but AR2207 might be good too.

Thanks bladeracer 2206H is something I don't have on hand, I do have 2207 and 2219 which are both on the fast burn rate side and was where my thinking was at.

There is no need to be concerned with barrel envy.
Your barrel is 98 calibers long. That translated to a 308 would mean a 30 inch barrel.
So there will be only minimal loss from those missing inches.
I would use powders within the range BM2, BM8208 or 2206H or their equivalents.

Wise words straightshooter, I'll see how the accuracy is first with 2207, I'm gusseing the 204R works best with a case full of powder ?

For a 20" barrel .204 Ruger, I've had great results with Hodgdon Varget and Reloder 10X. Varget's temp stability is a plus, and 10X meters really well. I was using 32gr Vmax.

What kind of velocities are you hoping to achieve?

I'm hoping for accuracy first Valdash, maybe 3900fps for the 32gr and 3700fps for the 40gr. Let's she how they fly this coming weekned

Hello Mate
I am using ADI BM8208 for my 204Ruger.
I use Sierra 39gr Blitz-king projectiles. I also have the 32gr Sierra blitz-kings but haven't developed a load for them yet.
I am getting an average of 3741 FPS (Feet per second) not extremely fast but with good accuracy to head shot out to 200 meters.
Muzzle energy is 1647 FP (Foot pounds).

Hope this is of use

Thanks Bello I'm actually at the range typing this, just shooting off some factory Norma 40gr Vmax which ain't shooting real good,.have load up some 32gr Vmax with some 2207 to try when the barrel cools down.

32gr Vmax seem the goods :drinks:

Is it a aftermarket barrel or factory? It must spit out some massive flames.

No.flame viewed with 2207, 3700fps with no pressure signs, ragged holes with Vmaxs, BTs will need some deeper seating I suspect due to the ogive shape
