hitek coated cast bullets- high pressures?

Post by mickb » 05 Mar 2025, 5:44 pm

Fellas I understand the coated hardcast bullets by blackwidow and Westcastings allow pushing them decent speeds, but would they stand up to 50KPSI pressures at the base? Do they negate the need for gas checks? Im not a caster of any worth so not even sure when gas checks are usually indicated.. question relates to running them in my 454 casull. westcastings has a 350 grain which would look good at 1800fps. Not full power but still over 50KPSI I would think. total no go? Am I missing/ignorant of a range of other factors here?

Trying to remember but I think no gas check needed till about 2000fps. Heard of them being pushed much faster.
Don't know about pressure tho..

Why don't you ph black widow.
They will mail out some samples free, just cost of post.

I'd also be interested in what they say.

When I heard blokes were stoking up the powder coated projies faster than they first expected, I talked with one of the HRBC partners but he is a pistol guy.
It seems they were up around those speeds and their limit is when the base starts melting.

I only do 30-30 and just worked up and test shot a few rounds about the same as 150gr jacketed loads.
I seen no leading but did find a point where accuracy dropped off so I just backed off a bit and settled on the moderate speed that still grouped well.

I also do a gas-checked 165gr load minus a couple of grains for 2 cuts in the lathe to fit the checks properly. These are loaded a few grains of 08 under my full jacketed loads and shoot pretty impressively.
For s**ts and giggles, I lobbed some at the 300m mound and impressed my self and the RO.

I have the load data and chrono info in my book if anyone does 30-30 and interested.
I did light pop-loads to start with using the known 2207 load.
Then tried Trail boss and it must have went sub-sonic but those loads are only good for 50 or 60m as they start keyholing on the 100yd targets.

You could just work up a load like I did.
