What do You think, ladies and gentlemen?

Post by Wm.Traynor » 03 Dec 2025, 12:34 pm

Is this bloke's idea any good? I am tempted to try it, only with the pipe cutters and not the pliers.
Pliers look way too rough for my aesthetic principles ;)
Is his initial premise based on fact; that is are some cases permitting inadeqhate obturation?

that's very interesting , thanks for posting . yeah, his use of pliers is very agricultural to say the least . if i was to experiment with that idea , i would use modified electrical crimping pliers that would give a consistent crimp all round the case . using a drill press and vice, with a good selection of drill bits, you could drill some cheap electrical crimps to varying sizes to test crimp depth and pressure . little bit more refined and scientific than the youtube posters methods . his theory looks sound though . ammo quality and chamber sizes of different rifles are variables as well . if you do try it, post your results please . cheers

Thank you bigrich.
Unfortunately I cannot see well enough at present to do bench shooting. It will be August 2026 before my new lenses are installed to deal with the cataracts that are spoiling my vision. I am told that I won't know myself after the operation. Hope so. Glasses are a nuisance.

Just one comment on that - anything you do to try and make your groups more consistent starts with everything being exactly the same each time including the ammo. So any idea tried has to deform exactly the same depth, shape, whatever else hocus-pocus being done. As Rich is getting at. I can't see hand squeezing has any consistency whatsoever with hand tools, including small pipe cutters. Nor can I see how mutilating a projectile even slightly from outside will make it "obturate" better in the bore.
Personally I think it's very strange.

Well Wapiti, I wanted to know what my betters thought and I welcome yours too mate. It's food for thought but I am a bit disappointed that you thought little pipe cutters wouldn't cut the mustard. Thems the breaks I s'pose :)

Geeze mate, you did ask for opinions.
But I am wrong many times a day despite the effort put in I'll say that.
But I'm sure you can tell I'm always playing around with my own "hair-brained schemes" (it's my own term for my crazy ideas) so all you can do is give it a go.

As far as experiments go, it's not anything that will take any money of much effort to try?
What other people think doesn't matter, I reckon.

Maybe not bulldust.
Maybe there is something in it.
But you'd assume precision, conformity for consistent results.

:drinks: No offence taken mate, I appreciate that.
My writing style is a bit strange, I don't mean to come across like I often do.
There's not a day goes by I don't do something strange.

If there is one thing I do know, it is that the written word is not nearly as effective as a face to face conversation.
