Deal on once fired Winchester .308 brass

Post by headspace » 17 Jun 2014, 4:27 pm

I just ordered 100 once fired 308 cases from Western Firearms in Sydney.

The cost was $20 plus postage to up north here in Lismore. For those interested, they are Winchester brass fired from match ammo by school military cadets.

Obviously some full length re-sizing will be involved as well as a good scrub of the primer pocket. The primer pockets are not crimped either.

When I get them I'll put in another report, but it looks like value for money.

I use a bit of secondhand winchester .308 brass from NRAA match ammo(I assume it is the same ammo, it may not be), about half fit the chamber of the rifle I use them in and all I do is neck size them. (I get them for nix).

The rest gets full length sized but be warned all Winchester .308 brass needs to be handled gently, don't oversize it more than neccesary, neck size if you can and look out for case splits.

Can't complain about the price though.

Yeah, kudos to everyone who contributes here.

A few other forums I've been on, I tell you... Their version of 'help' is being d**kheads and putting new guys down to stroke their own egos.

You need to filter out 9/10th of the reply calling you an idiot to find the answer you wanted.

We have a few like that come and go.

Most go... Some will settle down after a warning, others get just as fired up at the mods when they get warned.

We've got no time for that crap though so they get the boot.

All opinions are welcome as long as they're given in a half polite/respectful manner. If people can't help being d**kheads then, well...

If you can be confident it is only once fired (sure it is in this case) that's the way to go. Save yourself a small fortune.

Not so convinced by some of the used for sale ads I see though

If you are buying off a range or milsurp ADI you can be pretty confident. Winchester Australia load many thousands of .308 155grain match ammo for NRAA and small club events, at about a dollar a round it is comparatively cheap.

Most is simply thrown out, recycled or kept by other members for reloading.

Yep.

Wasn't suggesting the above wasn't on the level.

Just saying in general.

5% less life out of the brass for 80% less cost. What's not to like?

I usually manage to scrounge a half decent amount of once fired factory brass from the range on trips.

For $20 though just about cheaper to buy it when comparing to your time.

G'day Blackened, I must say that this is a pretty well behaved site.

I've been on a few others but this one is very friendly and pretty comprehensive in the knowledge bank of members.

As my Dad used to say "what's the point of having knowledge if you don't share it."

Thanks JD.

Us mods talk a bit of smack about problem people but for the most part everyone takes care of themselves here.

Like I said we have a few problems come and go, but it's not a regular thing.

It seems d**kheads attract d**kheads and you end up with a forum full of nothing but their arguments. We have a good bunch of blokes here who don't rise to the bait of trouble makers, it seems to keep them away.

I got the brass from Western Firearms today and cycled the lot through my rifle and found to my delight that out of the 100 only 27 needed full length resizing! The rest all chambered just fine.

They were all Winchester Super X and boxer primed. Nice and clean too. Got 20 loaded for the range tomorrow with some 150gn SGK's.
