Safe fillers in bottle neck cases?

Post by andym79 » 18 Jul 2014, 10:03 am

Hi guys can someone please let me know what fillers are safe in bottle neck cases?

Puff-lon?
Cream of wheat?
Sawdust?

(Is it true that organic solids all form hard plugs from time to time "bad in bottle neck cases").

Kapok?
Dacron?
Toilet paper?
Cotton wool?
BPI Original buffer?

I have not previously used any but am considering!

The proposed loads are these using cast bullets:

6.5X55 AR220718 grains 140gn GC projectile
6.5X55 AR2206H 23 grains 140gn GC projectile

6.5X55 AR2206H 28 grains 132gn GC projectile
6.5X55 AR2206H 29 grains 156gn GC projectile

6.5X55 AR2209 33 grains 132gn GC projectile
6.5X55 AR2209 35 grains 156gn GC projectile

6.5X55 AR2213 36 grains 132gn GC projectile
6.5X55 AR2213 37 grains 156gn GC projectile

6.5X55 AR2217 42 grains 132gn GC projectile
6.5X55 AR2217 42 grains 156gn GC projectile

The only ones I've seen used as a filler was Kapok in a 222mag. (blast from the past eh). Trying to duplicate 22 Hornet loads. There may be some more modern filler on the market.

I've used kapok in straight cases, but would find a bulkier powder to use in the 6.5,not a filler, might backfire---,literally

I know a lot of blokes use polenta as their filler.

Haven't done it myself but something for you to research.

Hope it helps.

OK. I will ask the question. Why filler? Are these very light loads?

Absolutely Polenta ....

with a mildly spiced tomato reduction, with mushrooms and sliced thick pork sausages spread over the plated polenta.

What? In your cases??

Yep, it's used to fill the void in BP cartridges which aren't filled to capacity.

(There is a little bit of debate on this, but it's widely accepted that) there should be no gap between the powder and bullet when filling black powder cartridges. So if you want some reduced loads you need filler.

It's a bit of a pain working up black powder cartridges as the filler effectively effectively reduces the case capacity. Unlike a smokeless cartridge where the capacity remains the same and you just increase the powder charge from lower to higher, with a black powder cartridge your changing two things at once which effect pressure and need attention.

They do make proper filler products.

Dacron is one.

mmm... thought as much. I had a similar question about reduced loads for 223 and sent an email to ADI. I think it could help you. If not sure this will apply to you just send them an email explaining your problem & I'm sure they will help if they can. Here is the reply I got in it's entirety.

Thank you for your enquiry of 24/4/2014 with regard to reloading using ADI Sporting powders.

Reduced loads can be achieved for any cartridge with jacketed projectiles where AR2206H is a standard propellant. Refer to the loads for AR2206H and use 60% of the maximum listed charge weight to achieve reduced velocities of between 1500 and 2500ft/sec. Velocities will obviously vary for different projectile weights. This type of reloading should only be attempted using AR2206H, as it is the slowest powder that still provides uniform light up at reduced loads.

Please find attached the latest test data for 223 Remington loads.

As an example, we have 27.5 gns of AR2206H listed as maximum for a 40gn jacketed projectile in the .223 Remington, so using 60% of this would mean a starting charge weight of 16.5 gns of AR2206H. You can then increase the charge weight until you find your desired velocity.

Please do not attempt to load below 60% of the listed maximum charge weight of AR2206H as light up problems may occur.

Extreme caution should be taken and loads should be worked up accordingly. Refer to our website at http://www.adi-powders.com.au or our 6th edition handloaders’ guide for more information, warnings and reloading safety.

We thank you for using ADI Sporting Powders.

Yours sincerely,

"Please do not attempt to load below 60% of the listed maximum charge weight of AR2206H as light up problems may occur."

The cartridge would just about be a maraca at 60%.

What is a "maraca"?
There can be more than "light up" problems with very light loads. The staff at ADI do heaps of testing so best to follow the instructions, or ask for a recommendation direct from ADI. I'm just providing the in the hope it helps.
