Reusing powder from pulled bullets

Post by beepbeep » 01 Aug 2014, 8:04 pm

Hello everyone,

I'd like to know peoples opinions of re-using powder from pulled bullets.

I have some hand loads from a sold rifle that I'd like to pull and re-use the powder and bullets from.

What do you think of reusing powder?

Thanks,

It is a practice I try to avoid. I use and have used a lot of different powders and I do mark things very carefully. However, I have made errors and got different loads from the one caliber mixed up in an ammo box. For example; I am currently working loads for my 30-06 and I am using 2209 and 2206 with the same case, primer and projectile. It is not difficult to get one in the wrong place. You can see the difference in these powders in a tray, no problem. That is not the case with all powders.

If you are absolutely positive and double sure you know the powder, go for it. I generally keep the cases, weigh the projectiles and toss the powder.

The old reloading rule "if in doubt, toss it out"
Now that's been said, who's coming for a shot?

I've done it before without incident with loads that where 3-4 months old or something from memory.

After I sold my .308 and got my 7mm-08 I pulled something like 150 .308 cartridges, necked down the brass to 7mm-08 and reloaded them again with the same powder.

No issues for me.

I do when I'm certain of the powder.

Varget and H4350, for example, look similar and I have different weight loads loaded with both.

They're marked, of course, but one never knows when a stray round with one type of powder is accidentally introduced into a batch with another type.

I will say that yes, I do, but very, very carefully.

Lucky for me, both rifles I reload use the same powder. I wouldn't reuse a random round though, even more so if I don't know the origin and power in it.

As said above, if your certain of the powder then store it in a manner that will not be confusing and mark it.

No, no no. Nothing like that.

I did these loads myself, I definitely know what powder is in them.

I'd just be pulling the powder out and putting it back in a tub to use again as normal working up new loads from scratch.

No doubt about what the powder is though.

haha I see, well put it this way. Powder won't change state unless it's ignited so pouring it from the container into a case, extracted again then poured into another case will be just fine (as long as you know exactly what it is).

If you are absolutely sure you know what you've got then yes? If not, steer clear.
