Buying second hand factory ammo ?

Post by buckle » 23 Sep 2014, 8:37 am

I've read a couple of the horror stories of people buying a second hand rifle and getting some hand loads for free with it.

Then boom, one of the hand loads had a double charge or something went bad.

Is there anything to worry about with buying second hand factory ammo if someone had left overs?

Can it be treated badly enough to become dangerous to use in any way?

As long as there is no obvious surface rust or something to show it's been seriously abused I can't see why not?

It's made to last decades after all.

I wouldn't have any hesitation as long as it looked right.

Check your legals though. Not legal in every state to sell ammo privately I'm pretty sure.

Been given " second hand" fact ammo, checked for the obvious, and used it no problems,BUT all reloads from an unknown source must be pulled,

the charge disposed of,weigh the projectiles and reload with a known powder charge, basicly anyone who doesn't is subject to the natural selection process,

Don't have a problem with second hand factory ammo.......and you'll know straight away.....BUT....any reloads that your not sure of, don't have the load data with them supplied by the guy who reloaded them........or look sus,,,pull them and do em again....better safe than sorry.

Even with... What the piece of paper says doesn't guarantee what's inside the cartridge.

I wouldn't take them from a stranger, period.

Was it one of the guys here that had his second hand lever explode after a double charge was included in some free ammo?

Green is oxidizing copper, right?

Moist powder, cases or some poor storage going on with them before, I guess?
