Will these go together ok?

Post by AussieTimmeh » 08 Oct 2014, 11:27 am

Hi all,

I can't reload 500 Nitro Express in the Lee progressive loader that my friend owns so I am looking to buy a simple press myself that can.

Does anyone know if we'll be ok putting these three items together despite the differences in brand?

Press (Lee): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360946184467 ... 1439.l2649

Dies (Hornady): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/141388542075 ... 1439.l2649

Shellholder (Hornady): http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/360666441387 ... 1439.l2649

Thanks for having a look.

Timmeh

The link to the dies does not work. This one seems to:
http://www.hornady.com/store/500-Nitro- ... 2-Die-Set/
I cannot find where it states if this is a 7/8" die set or the larger 1 1/4" set. Most reloading dies like .223 to 30-06 are the standard 7/8 wide die body and fit in all modern presses. If the 500 nitro is a larger 1 1'4" die set, like .577 snider, 416 cheyntac etc then you need to have a press that will take the larger die sets.
Luckily the press that you link to, the Lee Classic Cast will fit both the standard 7/8" dies and the larger 1 1/4" die sets.
Hornady make good dies.

What projectile and powder? That is going to be a fun project. Have you found some brass as yet?

Damn, it was working a few minutes ago. I think I fixed them.

Edit: re-reading what you said, sounds like it should all work together so I might go ahead and order it.

I have sent Bertram a request to invoice me for 40 x 500NE 3 inch cases ($99 for each box of 20) and 100 x .510 570gr projectiles ($110 for 100).

I am still working out powder and loads, but it seems like 100gr of the common powders will do it ok. One guy I know runs 103gn of 2209 and it seems to work ok.

The ebay link does seem good, it is a three die set, compared to the two die set listed on the Hornady website currently. Western Firearms in Australia also list the two die set for $149
I can't find what the third die is, there will be the standard full length sizing die and bullet seating die however the third may be a case mouth flaring die, or a crimping die. The bullet seating die probably does a decent crimp so my bet would be on the third die being a case mouth flaring die. Useful if you get into loading softer cast bullets.

Thanks mate. Yeah hopefully soon, the PTA is sitting there ready to go. I saw the gunsmith about a week ago and all the metal work was finished and had been test fired. They were just waiting for a serial number confirmation from the firearms registry to stamp it so that they could blue it, and the stock was just having its final touches applied.

I am hoping soon, but I am also waiting for my reloading gear to turn up too so I have something to shoot.

Just buy some factory ammo while your waiting.

It's nice and cheap, right?

Haha, $240 for a box of 20.

My brass and projectiles arrived today. Far out, they are heavy for each round. Can't wait to shoot it.

Do you just use regular scales for these things?

The charges must almost be too heavy for some?

To be honest I don't even know what the limit for our existing scales is. I need to measure 103gr for each round; I should check into that. The projectiles are 570gr but I am not going to match grade ammo so I am not measuring them for accuracy from one to another.

Thanks for the heads-up, it's something I need to check as I am just waiting on my dies before I can start reloading.

Maybe your scale tops out at 100gr?

You might have all these rounds with 110, 150, 130, 200, 105...

Probably best to double check
