Necked UP brass lifespan

Post by rummer » 10 Oct 2014, 9:48 am

I haven't done any of this so not trying to sound like a know it all so I'm just explaining it as I understand it :)

Back info: When you neck down brass you thicken the neck by forcing the same amount of brass into less space. Ideally after you neck down it would be best to turn to necks to bring them back to the right thickness so there is no chambering or neck tension issues.

My question: When you neck up you must be thinning the necks, and you can't do the opposite of neck turning and add brass.

Does this kill the life of the brass? Do the necks or shoulders split real quick or anything?

This would be for .270 > 30-06 specifically.

Can't help you with the .270 to 30-06 brass as I have neither. I have necked up .243 brass to .308 though.

I only did a few, and didn't shoot the life out of any because I was only doing it to give it a try while mucking about with some hand loading stuff.

I got 4-5 shots out them though before I chucked them. They still had some life in them too.

The reason I chucked them was because I bought my 7mm-08 and necked down hundreds of .308 brass for it. It wasn't worth having 5 necked up and back down cases to keep an eye on out of the 400 others I had. Not because they were gone.

Hope that helps.

Shouldn't be anything too drastic.

Might take 3 shots off the lifespan for you?

Bit of a guestimate...

Cool. 3 shots less would be no worries.

Was worried it would knock 75% off or something

Thought it might be better to sell and replace with new brass instead of necking up if that was the case.

If you anneal the brass necks before expanding the cases and after 4 or 5 firings they will last quite well . Thin necks last if they are not allowed to get over hard .

Yep, that's about it,...... I like to anneal most cases after 5 reloads anyway.

Never had an issue with necked up 30.06 - 35 Whelen.

It's a good point you brought up though rummer.
