Bulge in case neck of hand load - help?

Post by inventurkey » 07 Oct 2013, 5:45 pm

Hi all,

Hoping someone can tell me what I've done with this reload. Sorry for s**ting mobile phone pictures but hopefully you get the idea.

Picture 1 is probably best, you can see there is what looks like something round hit it from the other side.

Picture 2 you can barely see it, I've tried to highlight the shape, but it looks a bit like the same round thing has travel around the inside of the neck and raised up a little channel.

It's a lot more obvious when you run your finger over it.

This is a hand load, so trying to work out where I went wrong?

Is the neck on the opposite side of the bulge bent out? Put the bullet in an an angle and the base bulged the neck out?

Is this the only bullet or did the batch all come out like this?

If it's all of your cartridges you probably had your seating die too low and are squashing the neck of the brass.

Tough to tell from the picture. Some powder or other debris between the neck and bullet I would guess... but that is a guess.

I wouldn't be keen to fire that in any case. Pull the bullets, reclaim the powder, check all your gear and start again IMO.

It's just one round actually. The rest are fine, perhaps I did just get a bit of grit in there...

Could be the neck cracking, too hard to tell from your picture though... Something you should check on your other brass if this is happening to your loads as it will lead to problems...

Was it there before you seated the bullet?
Its not to much lube when resizing ? I have had them
on the shoulder but not on the neck

Don't know :(

I loaded 20 rounds a while, shot 10 and they were no good, so I stuck the last 10 cartridges away until now. This is the only 1 of the 10 which has the problem.

I think it was new brass but I can't be 100% sure, and I didn't notice the problem until right now.

Too much lube in the neck is a possibility though hey?

If the case is too long, and the die is a crimper it will have a similar affect, also if the projectile is canted in the case it might have the same result.

If it chambers easily ,use it,if not pull it, neck size the case and reload it.All brass being prepped for loading should be checked for length and defects.

Thanks BB.

I ended up buying a inertia hammer style bullet puller so I can salvage any future dud loads.

Pulled it, resized the brass like you said and it's waiting to be reused for next reloading session.
