Full length sizing new brass, why for some

Post by jordy » 08 Dec 2014, 1:40 pm

Hi guys,

For the guys that full length size brand new brass before reloading, why is it only some guys do it?

Do you just have rifles when very fine tolerances that can be stiff to feed them?

If you didn't size them first and put them through once, would the fireforming (which you'll do anyway) remove the need to have full length sized them?

The way brass is made cases from the same batch come from a series of dies so every case can have small variations. I usually f/l size new cases simply so they are all uniform before i do my case prep. trim to length, deburr case mouths, uniform primer pockets and deburr flach holes (the lyman flash hole tool requires uniform case length)

if you aren't fastidious about uniformity or you plan on loosing most of your cases in the scrub i wouldn't bother but for peace of mind when it comes to accuracy it can't hurt

I never full length size new brass. I'll ream flash holes, neck size and chamfer the necks only I use a Lee Collet Die because some new cases get a bit knocked about in the packaging. I then prime load powder and bullet and enjoy myself hugely. I doubt that the factory ammo is FL sized before it's loaded, and I've shot some nice groups with unfired brass.

Some are more fussy than others, some can be cut with a more general chamber.

Which brings you around to full length sizing or neck sizing here too.

After brass has been fireformed some rifles will love it, others won't feed it smoothly and work better with FL sized brass each time. It's the same deal for new brass.

For hunting I have never bothered.

First chambering might not be 100% smooth but after it's fired once it's fine.

Resize and reload from there and it's fine.

Same as above.

It's more one for the match shooting boys (or fussy hunters )

Yep, same as above.

IMO FLR just un-necessarily works the brass too much, I just neck size to fit, trim to length etc...

Cheers.
