Powder substitution?

Post by andym79 » 16 Dec 2014, 6:09 pm

Hi guys, I have been looking through my Lyman cast bullet manual and quite a lot of good loads seem to ask for Green Dot Unique and SR4756.

To what extent can AS50, AP70 and AP100 be substituted for Green Dot, Unique and SR4756 and vice versa?

I know they are equivalents, but some times than means no more than there burn rates not other characteristics!

What are your experiences of substituting any of these powders?

On another note is that unicorn of a powder AP70 available now?

What bullets in what cartridge? I'll look through some reloading manuals

PS: I bought 3kg of AP70 at my LGS when I saw they had it, I don't even have my c/f pistol yet. Lol

http://www.adi-powders.com.au/handloade ... alents.asp

That shows you the relative burn rates of ADI powders vs some of the more common powders from other manufacturers. Be careful and start at the lower end of the spectrum and you should be able to find a load that works safely

Green Dot and Unique can be found as Alliant powders are imported by Nioa. SR series of powders are not available and have been discontinued in the US. I have asked around about SR4759 previously with no luck.

I have used AP70N (Hodgdon Universal) in place of unique with middling results in the 30-30 and 35 Whelen. It is a low velocity, relatively high pressure option like using all the pistol powders in rifles for cast.

ADI does give some data for 30-30 using AP100:

However as there is no US equivalent to AP100 there is little data. I don't know that I would buy a tub just for one role. YMMV As you can see the AP100 loads cause a significant pressure increase for modest velocity. I would prefer AR2205 which seems to do well for me in the 30-30 and is generally available.

I wonder why.

They seemed to be reasonably popular judging by forum comments.

It seems that none of the IMR powders are currently imported into Australia. There is an NZ importer steveswholsalenz., I emailed him earlier this year to ask if anyone brought IMR powders into Australia currently and he replied that he did not think anyone did.

This is the link to his IMR stocks:

Range shooters just wanting to have a go with it maybe.

Throwing out a lot of lines hoping to get some direction to someone with it in stock.
