Moly bullets - extends barrel life or waste of money?

Post by Vladimir » 12 Oct 2013, 9:54 am

I've recently needed to take apart moly coated ammo - and realised that most of the coating (%60-%80) came off in the neck of the casing. This made me wonder if moly coating really has any effect ?
Any one done any real testing ?

I haven't shot 2 barrels to death using moly and non-moly bullets or anything, but I have done quite a bit of load testing between nosler silvertips which are molly, and ballistic tips which are.

No appreciable difference in accuracy, groups stringing out, or anything else I could tell as the barrel heated up or otherwise.

Not entirely what you're asking I know, but in short term testing I found them the same... Same result out of the barrel = same result in the barrel is my logic?

I've been told by my LGS that it's best to use them only, or not at all.

Using them consistently you get a later in the barrel to reduce wear.

If you're switching between moly coated and not your just putting it on and off.
