Sierra Tipped MatchKings

Post by Wobble » 21 Dec 2014, 9:38 am

Never thought MatchKing would get one-upped but Sierra themselves.

That's been there go-to for target shooting forever.

Need to convince the US military to adopt 7mm as their regular cartridge.

Then you guys will never need to wait for anything ever again

I gave up buying anything made by sierra a loooong time ago. Overpriced here in oz and dearer than Berger or hornady which I believe are better bullets

Just that Sierra say so.

Thinner jacket blah blah.

Can't say I've tested though.

Maybe different in match bullets but I was a big fan of Sierra for my .308 hunting rifle. Pro-Hunters where the ones to get... Did the business and cheaper than the alternatives.

Cheaper than Hornady which were my seconds favourite.

I couldn't get the Bergers to shoot if my life depended on it.

Only hunting bullets I'm talking about here though. Apples and oranges comparing to Match bullets.

What's wrong with the 175gr and 180gr regular Match Kings?

They've higher BC anyway...

.30 Tipped 175gr .308 is .545 @ 2400 fps and above

.284 HPBT 175gr is .608 @ 2100 fps and above

All well and good what the numbers are but if they don't shoot for you?

They say it's important to try new things ;)

I'd give them a go if they do a 7mm for you.

Sierra have resisted making a ballistic tip bullet because it is harder to do well than a standard Protected point bullet aka a Hollow point.

The simpler the bullet construction is the easier the job is to maintain precision.

I think they probably don't want to fall behind other bullet makers as far as competition goes.

If anyone can make a good BT bullet Sierra should be able to.

The term "Ballistic Tip" is certainly ubiquitous in shooting now.

The go-to for a significant amount of hunters I'd say. More so new ones who are buying first he first time, they'll all have heard/been told about BT and go looking for them.

Easy to imagine it's costing them business by not providing one. Lots going to Nosler, Hornady etc. instead.

It's an age old problem in business.

Even if you make the best product available , if many others are making something else and controlling a much wider and increasing share of the market they eventually force you to change your product to gain some of those sales even if that means making a lesser quality or different product that appeals to that new market.

A bit like Kodak invented the digital process but it's out of step management failed to bring it to the market quickly enough and others stepped in and took the sales . Kodak cameras eventually went broke .

IBM failed to see the potential of DOS and sold the rights to Bill Gates and Paul Allen for peanuts . They took it and it eventually turned into Microsoft corp.

So Sierra is just as you say, in the same boat , they have to compete in the same market or loose business even if they don't want to .

Kodak was something, that's for sure.

Invent digital, stick with film, go broke from your own invention

Only making it in .30 and .22 definitely doesn't show much enthusiasm for them does it.

I think they are testing their product with this first offering and if all goes well they will extend the range down the track .

Some of you guys need to read a bit from some of the precision rifle and Benchrest websites.

Almost no one uses ballistic tip bullets in competition, (hornadys Amax being one exception) and almost no one uses sierra bullets outside the Fullbore classes.

Berger and Lapua dominate in the factory bullet stakes, I'd say there's a very good reason

Here's a table of the billets used by the top 50 shooters in the 2014 precision rifle series long range shoot

Yep, not one of the top 50 shooters use sierra bullets anymore.

It's a compelling graph but I would add that 50 shooters isn't a huge data sample.

With more shooters the percentages could swing a lot and another might be the favourite.

Just saying... Would be nice to see a sample with 1,000 shooters etc. Not just 50. I get that they're the 'top' 50 but wider catching info would be nice.

Geez Berger are killing it.

Those prices must be driving a lot of them away, hey Lapua?

We we're not specifically discussing bench rest bullets or bench rest shooting.

Most popular among the top 50 of anything does not equate to the most popular over the whole user market. Competition shooters are a very insular lot and tend to use what the others use sometimes for just that reason alone.

What may be used by competitive bench rest shooters is no yard stick for what a long range shooter or hunter may elect to use.

Of course a Protected Point bullet can be mad to shoot very well at all average ranges but a Ballistic tip still can still have BC advantages. That is why competition shooters start trimming and closing meplats to raise the BC of a Protected Point bullet.

We don't need to read up, you do.

The importer would be the place to get figures from, NIOA?

I wonder if they'd give some numbers for an interest piece or something.

A list of how much of what sells would be better than a shooter survey.
