New reloader- what setup?

Post by eveyoz » 31 Jan 2015, 8:05 pm

I'm not keen to spend too much, what should I buy?

I shoot 9mm, 223 and 30-06 mostly.

If you could possibly list everything I'll need to get that would be good as I really am a newbie! Lol

Consider a lee kit. All reports they are ok, dies are extra, 2 die sets are about $45 if you shop around. . I think rcbs have a similar deal. Perhaps some one who has used one can comment. Or search this forum as the subject has come up in the past.

It all comes down to price, if you're getting into it to save money, Lee is the brand to look at (they even make loaders that don't use a press), if you're going to be shooting F-class or benchrest there are other brands, but you pay for the quality. Look at Redding and RCBS. You don't need to spend a fortune to make accurate functional ammo, if you want to compete at a high level you'll need top quality gear. If you'll be shooting a lot of pistol Dillon do a good setup.

Look at beginners reloading kits. They have most of what you'll need. Mine was RCBS.

Included:
Press
Scales
Lube pad
Lube
Case holder/rack
Powder thrower
Hand priming tool

You'll also want a:
- dies for each round you load (full length, nech and seating) and suitable shell holder for the press
- case trimmer for each round you load (Lee do basic ones, cheapest option)
- something to clean your cases: like a tumbler or Sonic cleaner (i still dont have one but should get one!)
- reloading manuals (yes, more than one)
- powder trickler (i still dont have one but should get one!)

I think that covers the basics of what will keep you loading for hunting and plinking for years and years.

AS stated in the last post, if you want to shave the ammo consistency down from 0.7"@ 100 to reliably under 0.4" for more serious target work or long range shooting then you will start looking at a lot of extra gear and quality upgrades but the above gets me in the 1/5MOA area (give or take depending how i'm shooting on the day and how pedantic i got with the last loading session).

Also something to pull your new loads apart, sooner or later you'll muff up and need to pull them apart and start again. I'd also look at lock rings so you can lock in the die position, one of the biggest problems people find is setting up the die each time you change between dies.

1290,

Yep.

We've no interest in discussing past events or the parties involved in them. Best not brought up again by mentioning names which it often seems to do. That's the stance.
See you on the firing line.

fair enough, this is your house. Though it doesnt make sense if you cant suggest a retailer, probably one of the largest in this country that caters for our pursuit..........

I thought my philosophical first line of the script was good value though... :D if I do say so myself.

The Rock Chucker Supreme kit I guess?

I have the same. That plus a 3 piece die set is about $580 I think?

Got mine a while ago so the memory has faded by that sounds about right.
