UP Brass worries

Post by headspace » 09 Feb 2015, 7:12 pm

I like to stick with one brand of brass and for the most part it's Winchester. So with the arrival of my new mod70 feather weight in 243 I began a bit of a ring around. There's nothing available anywhere. Apparently Winchester are using all their brass to keep up with demand for ammo and there's non left for re-loaders. So I' managed to get some factory ammo to sight in and get the barrel hot while I'm hot under the collar. Seems like the urban commandos in the US are buying up big. There's even a special underground ammo storage bin you can buy to keep your stash in if the big one happens. What do you give the man who has everything? answer; an under ground ammo bin.

Can't you just use 308 brass and form them from that?

Indeed you can.

Necking down .308 to .243

I'll need to look later today but I might actually have an unopened pack of Win .243 brass after I sold the rifle ages ago... Tell you tonight.

I figured she'd be doable - handy when one has brass supply issues as there is usually plenty of 308 brass kicking around.

Sorry headspace... Thought I might have a bag I could give ya but it's .308, not .243.

Will neck it down to 7mm for myself, wouldn't have bothered necking it up so you could have had it otherwise :|

Brass is still widely available on the civilian market here, maybe I should start a business exporting to Aus...

G'day Mitch, you could be onto a good thing mate. A friend of mine in Texas has already offered to scrounge some and send it over.

There is a former Aussie now living in the US doing what looks like a good trade on ebay with scopes.

If you're referring to the same guy I think you are he has the best price on high end scopes I've ever seen. Plus he includes import duties and postage in his prices so there's no hidden surprise costs

I'm pretty sure they're ITAR restricted so it could become costly/ a huge PITA. I know places like Brownell's won't send brass overseas

Brass is restricted, "a component of ammunition".

Permit required :problem:

Given up on Winchester brass, have ordered some Norma because I can't bring myself to shoot any more factory stuff. I just love my press...

Nothing wrong with the brass mate, just can't get any. The Norma stuff is very good and available but expensive for a hunting rifle.

My bad.

Misunderstood to mean you gave up on it because of problems.

I got a box of Hornady brass this morning. Looks really good and has been annealed. The case capacity looks about the same as Winchester but the brass seems to look a bit like Norma. $58 for 50 cases.
