McDonald's straw trick for RCBS chargemaster combo

Post by tripletwo » 17 Oct 2013, 10:25 am

I see that the RCBS chargemaster combo has been discussed a bit on here recently and I'm thinking about getting one.

I guess you guys know about the "McDonald's straw trick".

I've read in reviews or whatever it makes it "more accurate" but I'm not getting how sticking a straw in the end of it makes it better :?

I believe it's an issue which only effects some powders, depending on their bulk.

As a general rule, they're excellent scales and don't require any hacks to be accurate.

I don't know if you know the unit well, but the tube which dispenses the powder has a thread inside - it rotates and the powder tumblers along the thread to the end and out.

The problem for some powders is that at the end of the tube it can cluster a little, and as the tube is turning it hugs together until the weight is too much then comes out in a little heap and you're .1 - .2 grain over your target load.

Only some powders though, Trail Boss is one I think that can be prone to it.

I recently bought one and have put through about 300 powder charges, and I think it's done done a .1 or .2 heavy charge 3-4 times in all that?

Sorry - but I think you will find that Brownell's free postage offer is only for the mainland US. It is still a good offer though, even if you have to add in even up to say $50 for postage (which, depending how far you are from the right capital city dealer, you might well have to pay here anyway).

Ok I have ordered the RCBS to replace my woeful other brand. But we don't have a McDonald's close by only a Hungry Jacks, devastating...

You might as well just throw it in the bin when it arrives then.

Or send it to me ;)

Might have to try this trick with my Hornady thrower. It's been pretty good but does over throw on occasion due to the 2209 powder clogging up and dumping at once from the tube.

Cheers

Let me know how it goes if you can.

I have the RCBS combo, curious if it's just RCBS that does this or if all the digital scale/dispenser combos do.
