Reloading NOOB

Post by Muddy1967 » 17 Oct 2013, 4:13 pm

Ok, I am in need of some advise from you all knowing Gurus. :D

I am looking at a Lee anniversary reloading kit. This should cost me $220.

Questions:
1. Are the Lee kits any good?
2. What reloading book should I look at getting?
3. What advise have you got for me?

Thank you in advance for all of you hard earned knowledge. ;)

Certainly nothing wrong with Lee.

A tried and true brand for reloading.

Only complaint is that it's a bit weak that the kit doesn't come with a reloading book :?

The Speer Bullets manual is a good one IMO.

.222 for myself as that is the only pea shooter I have (at the moment)
.204, .308 and .30-06 for my Brothers in law to play with.

We will see from there.

I'm sure you don't need a safety lecture on this... Read the manual, be careful blah blah.

One thing I will say, don't skimp on the lube when resizing your brass.

Getting a stuck casing out of your press is no fun.

In a nut shell, I'd say the things to double check while learning are:

1. Setting the resizing die properly

2. Setting the seating die properly - If you're too high/low you're have trouble seating your bullets or will damage/squash your cartridges when seating the bullet.

3. Check your powder charges regularly to start with until you're move comfortable with the process and your equipment is proven.

Mate

i will stop short of telling you what I have got then saying that is the best. I started with a Lee and it was fine, always little things to add to the so called "kits" and I would put some thought into that. In terms of books I used the "ABC's of Reloading" book that I bought of Amazon. I don't know if it is the best as it is the only one I bought for showing me how to set up reload etc. You will need other books for loads and bullets though. I have about 3 or 4 of those types. You can download the ADI book from the net for free.

Nowadays the old youtube cheesy home made movies do give you a lot of information as well so they are worth a look at to get the basics in your head. BTW I just saw the LEE Anniversary kit for sale on Clayton's Firearms for $175 you cant purchase online though.

So my advise read the book watch some youtube movies get the basics in your head then work out what equipment you may want to buy. I remember when I first bought my gear I had no idea of what extras I would need e.g reloading blocks, primer seater (handheld) scales case prep.
