Reusing removed live primers

Post by inventurkey » 04 Mar 2015, 10:29 am

If you use a box of the wrong primers for a load or whatever and remove them all with the die, is there any reason not to use them again?

Does the de-priming pin damage or crush the seal or whatever it is on the inside of the primer?

I have re used a few in my time with no major ill effect . However there is a potential to crack the priming compound and cause a mis or hang fire .
I would probably not reuse primers in ammo for dangerous game , important competitions or long storage .
Also the primer compound has a moisture seal over it a kind of lacquer so if that is cracked it would make the primer less resistant to air moisture , contaminants etc and reduce it's storage capability somewhat . A fully sealed new primer is a very long lasting part of the round and in bad storage conditions can out last the brass case and the powder load and still fire ok .

It's probably not the best thing for them but I've deprimed live primers and reused them without issues in the past. Go slow with the depriming and inspect the primers to see the anvil hasn't been distorted or crushed and they should be fine to use again

I resized all my .308 brass to .284 when I swapped to the 7mm-08.

In the shuffle I accidentally primed 100 brass which I hadn't necked down yet so hard to remove them all, neck them, and re-prime them all.

Shot the 100 without incident.

This was CCI BR2 primers.

The only thing I'd add is when removing them raise the press slowly so you don't pierce the primer with the sudden impact of the pin.

If you take it slow and steady though I would have no hesitation using them again.

Risk versus cost? Not worth taking in my humble opinion.

About $7, yep.

Can't argue with avoiding risk I suppose.

+1. They are designed to go off when hit. Should be ok if you are gentle. I have done this with about 20. No obvious issues, but that is for hunting not competition.

Never tried this , But would this not cause your primer to be loose in the pocket and not seal properly ?

You got me wondering.

I just primed, deprimed, and primed a case again.

Inside of the primer has an indent from the put, but it fits in the pocket again well enough.

so you can remove new primers from the brass using your normal press and neck sizing and de-priming die? no specil tools required?

Normally takes quite a wack to make a primer go off, I guess most of us have experienced a light strike before.
But then you see stuff on Screwtube where some progressive press has shot bits though the ceiling makes you wonder.
Never had to do it myself but I’d try it if I had a reason to.
I’d just be sure to have plenty of protection, and not have the powder thrower on the press :problem:

I've seen two such instances I think after that fact, the story is always 'using the press as normal' but without examining the thing who knows.

You don't really know the setup, how hard/fast the brass was run into the die, primer/case condition before hand, twisted case apply unusual pressure or something. Who knows.

Stopping shy of giving others advice on the subject but I've also removed live primers and reused with no with problem. Just treat them with respect as you do all firearms and propellants.

Yeah that's the key, it's just to easy to become complacent when you've "done it a thousand times"

Mine sound like screeching rubber.

No chance of missing it. Especially when the battery reaches the low point at 3:00am :problem:
