Rings around the mouth/neck of .303 brass

Post by fenderstrat » 25 Jun 2015, 10:21 am

Hi guys, I'm pretty new to reloading. I was cleaning some once fired remington umc brass in .303 and i noticed they had a ring around the .mouth/neck, like its been cut there. Is that normal? Is my brass bad? I've also used ppu and s&b brass and those didnt have that ring in there, only the remington brass. Help?

Were the projectiles crimped by any chance? Also measure the length of the case and ensure it falls within the trim to length in the reloading manual you're using.

I dont really know if they were crimped or not. And this is all factory ammo, once fired in my rifle. So the cases wouldnt be too long would they?

From memory UMC/Remington ammo is crimped...this will explain some of the ring in the picture....

Other than that, no idea, but check the case length just in case.

Yep, looks like it was crimped to me. Trim if required and refill..

Just had a thought, we are great enviromentalists, we recycle lots of brass. Greenies should be thanking us. Lol

I don't know what the answer is there to be honest, either crimping or trimming flaw when made? Total guess that last one.

Either way I wouldn't call it bad brass.

Have you measured the case OAL? Is the necks long or near the correct length?

In any case, I'd have no hesitation using the brass. Just size it and trim it and reload as usual.
