Suitable 284/7mm for Fallow Deer

Post by Gwion » 28 Jul 2015, 4:56 pm

Fallow deer are pretty light so i'm thinking that maybe the Hornady 120gn Vmax will sort them out with head & neck shots (meat hunting, not trophies). Probably even a vital shot would see good penetration. This will be a general feral load for goats, pig, etc as well.

Any thoughts or advice from those who have used them on similar sized game?

For larger, tougher game i am thinking 140-150gn bullets.. Something like the SST.

Main load will be 162 Amax for target and the possible long range hunting (in the future).

Cheers

Nosler ballistictip hunting 120gr red tip spitzers are worth a look I prefer them to the Vmax
The Nosler 150gr accubond lr has a BC of 0.611 worth a try when Amax are scarce.

I'll give them a run while the barrel is being run in.

Hey Gwion,

I shoot Nosler Ballistic tips.

120gr for pests and small game (fallow/chital/hog)

140gr for larger (sambar/red/rusa as 130gr+ is required legally)

Both accurate, the 120gr especially.

When I was shooting .308, 150gr SST was a great bullet. If Hornady is your brand then I recommend those also.

For Fallow though, 120gr will be plenty.

They should work fine on Fallow. Seen plenty get knocked over with 22.250's and 204's so the 120gners should do it with ease, as with any cal, shot placement is the key to a successful humane kill

Id also look at Speer hot core 130gr Sp's. I've used them on pigs and they penetrate well.

Fallow didn't pose any resistance to .308 165gr game Kings spent the whole weekend debating a change to 130gr HP's. In hind sight I should have.

Easy mate.

You're probably aware but even minimum legal calibres for them in most states is .243 calibre and 80gr pills.

120gr to the noodle will do the job without any doubt at all.
