So much for Lapua consistency

Post by fuggle » 28 Oct 2013, 10:30 am

Posting this after a frustrating few hours reloading with a mate.

Lapua has a big reputation obviously. I'm sure it's well deserved in part so I'm not writing them off completely, but in this instance results weren't great considering the cost.

A mate of mine in to target shooting recently spent the extra for some Lapua brass in .308 as they're supposed to be more consistent in wall thickness and all the rest.

He shot them all to fire form them, trimmed them and tumbled them.

This morning we weighed them all to see how consistent then where.

Long story short they were all over the place, just as much as his Winchester brass.

Of the 50 only 6 of them were in a half grain range of each other.

The rest spread out over about a 1.5 gr range.

Don't know if that's being too fussy, but for all the hype around them that doesn't seem that fantastic.

So there you go.

Plenty of people swear by Lapua, but then there are people winning F-Class with Winchester brass so who can say.

Not that I'm this fussy about my ammo, but isn't weight brass considered a bit inaccurate?

I read elsewhere the preferred (by who, I don't know) way to measure accurately is to measure internal capacity with some sort of alcohol that doesn't stick inside?

Fancy brass is for the placebo effect IMO ;)

i put all my hornady brass into weight batches and i did see slightly better groups. i did a similar thing with 22lr rounds and found the same. my mate bought the nosler custom brass and it was all within .1 of each other. never got to try it tho coz his westherby was s**t.
bit poor from lapua tho.

It was only one bag, so I don't know.

Hasn't inspired me to go off and do any more testing though.

Winchester or Remington or whatever will do the job for half the price for me.
