GB 12g Cartridges not seating the primer

Post by Doz » 06 Sep 2015, 9:06 pm

Hi all, just got into reloading for my 12g Akkar Churchill.

Purchased a second hand good con mec 600 jr 12g reloader.

Got some older shells and wads to suit, also got some wads to fit my Trap GB clay shooting shells so I can reload them with No 2 shot.

The large primers go fine into the old Winchester shells and all shoots fine, but I have tried seating the same primers into the GB shot and they fall out

With the issues trying to get wads for the current (last 7 year odd) Winchester shells currently, and the fact that GB trap im paying $85 for a slab of shot, and given that ive got 1000 wads to suit that type of shot, id really love to be reloading them.

Current large primers brand im using is Cheddite type 209.

Has anyone else found this problem and have they been able to resolve it? thanks

I have been having great difficulty with finding 12g wads as well.

If you pop a unfired Winchester primer out, will it seat in the GB hull? The GB are from Spain - is that right? Would they have a different primer size?
Their website states they use G primers:

Could it be these type of primer as Rio is another Spanish company:

This forum suggests that cheddite primers are smaller:

Have you guys tried getting wads from your local range?

I've seen guys get a bagful of spent ones from other guys shooting on the day.

Evidently you know nothing about the function of wads in a gun cartridge, they are definately NOT reusable.

Off the cuff comments like yours lead the the unknowing into potentially dangerous territory.

My dog leaves "spent biscuits " in the yard, about as reuseable as your spent wads.

I'm no expert, no.

I was just going by the fact I've seen people collecting them and read of people reloading them.

So what is the risk?

Its a good idea Rocker for sure. The issue I have been informed of is that for the last 7 years Winchester have done a shell which is almost impossible to get wads for, so it seems we need to grab the older shells and ensure that you have the correct wad for it. Imo, I would still be grabbing any and every shell i could find as things do change and wads may become available.
