257 Weatherby Magnum Loads.

Post by Baz460 » 21 Nov 2015, 11:27 am

Hi. Any load suggestions for 257 Weatherby, 26 inch Barrel, 1/10 twist for the 87 Grain Speer Hollow Points?

I will be shooting mainly pigs and dogs from 100 to 350 yds. I have tried to get some Nosler 100 grn Balistic Tips, but there are none in the country from what I've been told, so I managed to get some Speer 87 grn pills, and would like them to be doing around the 3800 fps.
Any feedback on what they are like on pigs and thin skinned game would be appreciated.

Cheers Baz.

Are you using ADI powder?? they list loads for 85 and 90gr projectiles, I'd be starting with the 90 suggestions.... for around 3700fps. Boy thats moving along

I'd like to see the terminal effects on Ms Piggy... :P

I have a gap around the quarterbore, always thought of the -06, but the webbery looks interesting, and the case is near 'standard' mag size...

Hurry up and post some exploded pigs n dogs would you

G'Day Baz!
Had some sizzling 85gn Nosler B/T loads worked out for mine!
I'm away at work,But from memory it was 79gns ADI 2217 - C.O.L 75.00mm which gives you a caliber remaining in the neck of your case - 3740 fps.
Turned foxes inside out!!!
I stopped using them after the 50 rounds I made up. ( Consider your barrel life )
Have a look at the Hornady SST 117gn.
Cheap enough,Will absolutely smash everything you're looking to shoot and at around 32-3300 fps won't knock your barrel around near as much!

Thanks guys. Mick I've decided to not go over 100 grns with the projectiles. I will get my mate to load me up 50 with the 100 grn Barnes TSX that I have, but the blokes that have used them say that they will go through a thin skinned animal, even small deer. But the 100 grn Nosler BT's will not exit on pigs and dogs if the velocity is up there around 3600 fps. I love the smaller projectiles, combined with a stout load, as the when pushed out at speed are devestating and have used Hornady 75 grn HP's and 90 grn HP's in my 25/06 and they will turn a cat inside out and absolutely destroy a large pig. Mick as you mentioned about barrel life, I wanted to avoid the 87 grn pills, but at this stage that is my only option, not wanting to go over the 100 grn 's projectile, so I will load up 50 and wait until I can get the Nosler 100 grn BT's in. If the 87 grainers are accurate pushed out at 3800fps and flatten everything it hits, then I will be a happy, and that will compensate for the, 'Extremely Bad Barrel Life of a Smokin 257 Weatherby'........But hell it will be fun while it lasts.
.Cheers Baz.

Hi Baz
I know that this post is getting a little stale but as I'm new to this site and I shoot 257 Weatherby so I couldn't resist a reply.

The Lyman Reloading Handbook on page 172, suggest that 73gn of H-4831 pushes a 87gn jacketed SP to 3731fps and is their prefered load. Hodgson H-4831 is made by ADI and marketed as ADI 2213SC (short cut), they have assured me that this powder is ballistically the same as H-4831.
Not being able to buy Reloder22 which I usually use, I tried it out, 75gn easily produces .5" or better group at 100yd, although shooting a little lower than RL-22 but slightly tighter groups and what appears to be a cleaner barrel at the end of the day. I'm using Hornady 87gn HP projectiles and Federal magnum primers.
I expect to get about 20 reloads per case and a barrel life of about 5000 rounds using this load, in keeping with others who shoot this caliber in the US.
The Lyman handbook seems to be very conservative with it's loads and the above can probably be carefully stretched if you are using the MkV action
