30-06 Improved Loads

Post by Bazooker » 12 Feb 2016, 8:08 am

Anyone out there loading for one of these?

I was looking at mid weight projectiles 165 -190 gr maybe 200's. 168 AMAX/VMAX has some appeal.

There is some basic info for AR2209 on the ADI site, anyone using anything different?

M98 sporter has a 1:10 22" barrel.

I load nosler bts over 44.0gr AR2206H and CCI large rifle primers as my hunting rounds. Has been instant death to everything hit on the first shot so far. They just drop.
You can load hotter, but this just seems to give good hunting results for me, and you can't complain with the results I'm getting, so I'll leave it be for now.
I intend to get up north after camels and donkeys at some point in the next 12 months or so, So I'll be looking at developing a load with a heavy pill to make clean work or the donkeys. The 165 bt should go OK on the camels, but not sure about the tougher donkeys, but I'll just use one load up there, so I may try some 220gr round noses.

Thanks Wm & Bill, good info there.

I have some 220 grn Woodleighs set aside for heavy load development in future; I will get to that in due course, after I nut out the basics.

The 2206H is appealing as one can also work with reduced loads from the Hodgdon data, I reckon it may be more suitable in a shorter barrel?

Nick does not list 2206H for any bullet weight for the 30/06 A I.

If they're already dropping the only thing you kill more by going hotter is your shoulder ;)

Thanks Mich, good advice there.

My ears did prick up at the mention of AR-2206H (H-4895 for you blokes) as I could have had the opportunity to work with some reduced loads as well.

Reduced loads are one option, are you struggling with the 30-06 recoil though or just mucking about?

30-06 likes the heavier pills to shoot well but a 180gr - 190gr grain bullet in front of that much powder isn't the gentlest option available.

If you're not enjoying shooting it you could look at .308 or 7mm, 150gr and 140gr seems about the sweet spot for those and both are fine hunting calibres and would have about 25% less recoil than the Springfield shooting heavy pills.

Food for thought?

Thanks Redwood, it's more a case of mucking about with some different powders and proj's for plinking and some smaller game if I see any while I am out and about.

Cool mate, nothing wrong with mucking about.

I'm over recoil so just tossing out another idea, ha
