Data for Sierra .224DIA 77GR TMK (7177)

Post by juststarting » 22 Apr 2016, 9:24 pm

Hi All

Wondering if someone could help me with load data for Sierra .224DIA 77GR TMK (#7177). Trying to find some load data for it, but no luck.

I did find the data for the BTHP version of the same projectile (9377), but wanted to know for sure, in case they changed something less obvious.

Thanks

Alright, so just heard back from Sierra.

Identical data for starting loads. Longer projectile, which will compress heavier loads, since I am starting around min, data is the same and I'll work up from that.

Actually is Varget, i believe; or, rather, Varget is rebranded AR2208.

For target or field? Ie: loading into a mag or single feed?

For single feed target rounds, seat the bullet so the ogive is on the lands; not jammed but firmly on the lands. Then see if they will load in your mag, if not, no biggie.

Why, you ask? 2 main reasons. Being on the lands will hold your cartridge concentricly in the chamber so your fireforming and flow of brass will be as even as possible, creating a perfect fit in the chamber for neck sizing. Secondly, by starting on the lands you have a definite datum point for when you start experimenting with seating depth. Also, being on the lands often results in good results, anyway. For me at least.

Another tip to pass on that i found very helpful, from another forum member. Once fireformed, set your neck sizing die up so that it only sizes the first 1/2-2/3 of the neck. The unsized portion of the neck will act to center the bullet concentric with the bore; especially if you followed instruction A for fireforming.

Good luck and have fun. :geek:

Gwion, this specific bullet, for target. Re advice, thanks! I'm across some of that stuff, but still very much a newbie and nuances of seating depth is something I am experimenting with now.

My Savage model 12 FCV .223 likes what is a slight overload (according to ADI) - so don't use the load yourself.

Bottom right pic is a 0.166 MOA group which is good enough for me. (Just looking at the date reminds me that I've been doing too much shotgunning and haven't used the rifle for ages.)

Sierra 9377 .224 77gn HPBT match projectile, CCI primers, Winchester brass, ADI 2208 powder.

I worked up the load using OCW technique (look it up)

See attached pic.

Image taken from 'On Target' software which calculates group sizes.

Cheers, Ross.

What twist rate is in your 12FCV?
