Using nail polish to prevent moisture

Post by juststarting » 10 May 2016, 7:47 pm

I read somewhere that some people when reloading in large quantities and storing ammo for some time use nail polish around the primer and where bullet meets the case, to prevent moisture getting in.

Who does this?

Is it really necessary (since there's a lot of tension, essential making it waterproof)?

Also sounds to me like this would make the action dirty, with flakes of dried nail polish flying everywhere.

Discuss :)

I've seen it done on powerhead rounds for shark fishing, but for 12 gauge rounds wax to seal the crimps and nail polish for the primer.

Powerhead rounds need to be watertight, they're kept on the boat and used in the water.

I wouldn't be surprised if people are doing it in extreme climates, a little nail polish to dirty the chamber and barrel is a small price to pay for reliability.

I vacuum pack anything I'm not going to shoot in the next 2-3 months, especially rounds with moly coated projectiles. In my youth I was a mad crazy scuba diver and spear fisher. I used to put the 12ga rounds in a condom and tie a knot in the end, perfectly watertight and easily replaced. My dive box made me look like an transsexual sex addict due to the boxes of condoms and women's panty hose.

When they saw your condoms they probably thought you had some serious lead in your pencil.

There are enough processes in reloading as it is. Don't if i CBF to be honest. If it's a storage/time thing, Bretts idea of vac-pak or a waterproof ammo can would be my preference.

So the consensus is that it's a bit of bs... Thanks for the responses.

When I start loading in reasonably large batches, I think vacum pack seems like the way to go...

I have been under the impression that you are a transsexual sex addict for at least 6 months.

Unless you are storing your reloads in a bucket of water I would not be too concerned about sealing them to be air and water tight.I have some reloads from over 20 years ago, only for a 30-30 but they still go bang with all the accuracy to be expected from that rifle, some of my reloads may not get used for a couple of years, never had a problem with moisture, just store your ammo where there will not be too much temperature variation ;)

Im in the same boat, load and shoot just a few each year & that has been my experience too.

Mmmm... I think the military use varnish or laquer to seal the ammo? Safer than stealing the wifes nail polish. Particularly if she is Russian. :wtf:

Brett, Im off to buy that mask and popping corn now.
