What to do with spent ammunition?

Post by Hunt2eat » 19 Jul 2016, 4:00 pm

Hey people,

Another noob question for you all to answer.

I have a heap of spent cartridges from my .308, what can I do with them?

Seems a waste to dump them, I dont reload (one day I will) but until then.

Can I sell them? Where? Price?

I have spoken to a recycling plant that will take them for $3.45 per kilo good? Bad?

What would be your recommendations?

Thanks in advance!

Sell them to a gun shop. You'd probably get a lot more than that. Or on Gumtree. Or just hold on to them, if you are going to reload. It's the most expensive component.

Keep them for one day when you do reload.

Most significantly THOSE particular cases are "fire formed" to your rifle. Just neck size the not full length resize them and they will be more accurate than newbies.

How many do you have? Possibly a member here will take them off your hands.

Alternatively there's a Face Ache page "Australian Reloading Talk & Trade" where you should be able to offload them.

Better off to keep them, if you plan to reload in future. might save you some $$$ for sure.
Ive just gotten into shooting, 308 also and havent started reloading yet but im keeping all mine.
Plus finding once fired cases can be hard.
you can never have too many :)

Thanks for the info. Will probably just hold on to them for now. Until I get into reloading. Cheers

Have to totally disagree with Brett. Spent ammo is extremely dangerous, carcinogenic and illegal to keep even if you have a firearms licence. It's actually a punishable ny dearh offence - even if you don't survive (it's a new law... it's complicated...)

But you are in luck... I have a free disposal service that I offer purely out of the goodness of my heart. You can post them to....

Global copper price is about 6.50/kg, so half that for alloy ( brass ) is probably reasonable for a bulk scrap merchant.... but its VALUED ADDED BRASS...... so for the few dollars its REALLY not worth it, if you sell as used brass you'll get many time that, so;

1) stick it in a box in the garage and leave it till you or someone you know needs it
2) sell / trade / give away to a brother (or sister) on the forum....

How many you got??

Bencubbin Rifle Range in WA is currently selling once-fired .308 for $30/100.

I can't see why you couldn't ask similar for yours. New brass is two or three times that depending on brand.
But, I'd hang onto them for when you start reloading yourself.

very bad advice!!! aussie post = federal prison time :allegedly: your best course of action is to get in your car and drive to a registered disposal yard, which by happy accident i happen to have in my shed  no need to thank me,,its a public service

Mate, a Smart reloading press will cost you less than $50 and a full set of Lee dies about $80. After you buy your powder, primers and projectiles you'll probably reload those cases for not much more than buying factory ammo. After that, you'll save heaps and it is a surprisingly easy pastime to reload, just stick to the basic rules and you can't go wrong. Plenty of people on this forum to give you advice on how to do it.

'Smart' is Italian I believe, I'm sure the tumbler I bought say so..... therefore as long as its not chinese, the presses couldnt be that bad, I only have US presses myself, but I'd buy a smart press, maybe for a spare, what could go wrong....theyre heavy cast pieces of metal, lube the moving bit... :unknown:

Surprisingly robust and does everything that it's supposed to, I can't see why it wouldn't last. One of the Sydney gun shops has them on special for $39 at the moment.
