556 brass reloaded to 223 specs

Post by petemacsydney » 05 Aug 2016, 6:03 pm

hi all
see quite a few comments around this on the interweb, but thought i'd check with some of you.
i bought some once fired brass from the aussie once fired brass guys.
i'm going to use it for standard accuracy hunting rounds (i'm not worried about shooting 1/2 an moa with them, i have other brass for my target shooting)
in the bag were quite a few 556 brass cases. my question is... can i load 556 brass with my 223 dies etc and fire through a 223?.
from what ive read they are the same outer dimensions? with potentially some differences in wall thickness etc? -
thoughts?
cheers
p

Yeah they will fit. Pay attention to the case length, ie. trim to spec. The brass is thicker (reduced volume) so go 5% below the starting charge.

What happy said. They have thicker brass so they work in a automatic rifles chambers which can vary in size without splitting. So the inside is smaller. Start slow and work your way up when developing your load, checking for pressure signs along the way. I used all ADI once fired 556 brass when I was pro roo shooting in my 223
