30-06

Post by Crrrock » 05 Aug 2016, 9:11 pm

I just bought a 2nd hand 30-06.
I'll look up the ADI book for load specs, but I thought I'd ask here...
Favourite powders?
Does anyone use cast projectiles? Coated?
Source of 1ce fired brass, or should I buy new and save to reload?

advice and recommendations appreciated.

just sayin'.
Mike.

ps: I already load 5.56 using 2206H and I'm casting 40gr gas checked for plinking.

Ar2206h would be fine if you want to load cast bullets.

Ar2209 is THE speed and accuracy powder for the 30-06.

Ar2208 treads the middle ground ok.

58-60g of 2209 with 165-168 grain bullets is a great all round load. Work up from about 57g of Ar2209.

If you're shooting cast at lead velocities I'd use Trailboss.
In my 8x57mm with 180gn bullets 20gn of AR2206H makes 1050fps.
But 14gn of Trailboss makes 1400fps.

Great calibre; owned about eight of theses, all in different makes, models and action types; what's yours? More versatile than the 308 for hunting, and lots of potential for the reloader; Used Ar2201 years back, and 2208 should be a good all round powder for this one. Have fun with it.

Iv'e tried cast 150gn gas checked bullets with 18 gns Trail boss in my old FN Mauser. Great load that's a quiet, low recoil and cheap load for lighter built and new shooters and for plinking. Had to raise the sights to 600 meters to hit our 200 yard gong. Haven't done any serious grouping with it yet - to many other projects.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

AS-50N is roughly equivalent to Green Dot and both can be used for reduced loads but I no longer know where I got the original data. The ADI loading manual indicates the burn rates are very close. I did use AS-50N some years ago for 180 gn cast projectiles in my 3006 just for fun. Accuracy was about 1.7 moa I found my old note book & it indicates I loaded from 11.5 to 14 gr AS50N.
I think it was about 1400 fps. Suggest you check out a few manufacturer re-loading manuals. Shotgun powders are often used for reduced loads as it is reletively fast burning.
I use AR2208 for both my 3006 and my 223 for normal hunting loads.
