Reloading power life span

Post by beepar » 18 Nov 2013, 9:25 am

Hi guys,

I'm interested in reloading and my LGS usually does a bit of a discount the more you buy at the time for ammo and reloading components.

If I stock up on primers and rifle powder to get a discount, how long does it last.

I'm not talking decades or anything, but if it took me 1-2 years to go through all the power and primers, is that going to be a problem for either of them?

Buy up young man, No problems at all with powder, primers or reloads lasting for many years when stored properly.
Don't open the containers if you can help it, but if you buy the larger bottles and want to pour some off to another container,
then it will still last for years, just better not to allow contamination, from air or dust etc. if you can help it.
I am always open to buy old powder etc, even in what appears to be rusty containers, provided the container hasn't started to disintergrate,
if it smells ok and appears ok, it is probably ok.
I have some powder at the moment that is at least 20 y.o. and some ICI primers that are probably close to 40 y.o.

You'll be right.

1-2 years would be no problem is it's stored in half decent conditions.

You're talking more years and worse weather than you'll have in your gun safe to make it go bad.

I am still using shotgun primers that are 10 years old.

+1 with Hardcast. Buy the bulk and decant into smaller containers as required. I keep it in a shed where it does not get too hot, <25deg, never had an issue.

I've shot plenty of 2 year + powder with no ill results.

You'll be right.

A mate of mine has taken about 3 and a half years to go through a 4kg tub with no worries.
Good news, everyone!

Thanks guys.

I won't be buying tonnes at once so suspect a few months at the moment for mine. No worries there then...

Thanks.
