Necking up a 308

Post by bigpete » 15 Oct 2016, 3:58 pm

Just curious has anyone here ever necked up a 308 to say 375 or 44 cal. ? I'm sort of half keen to do it with my mates cz 550 to make a bit of a brush hunting rifle,I find more often these days that I don't shoot beyond 200m and I like a thumper that carries nicely too. Any thoughts ?

I have a 375-08 built on a Marlin lever action, Only flattened wallabies and a Fallow stag with it so far.

I just turned up a set of expanders and now I just expand and load.
If you go that route just send your brass down and I will expand it ready to load and post it back.

I opened up a set of 308 dies when I first built the rifle then after talking to another bloke he imported 3 sets of dies from CH4D and sent me a set. :D :D

OK cool. So I'm guessing you pretty much just run a 308 case thru your sizing dies and come out with it as a 375/08? And then its just a simple matter of seating a projie. So with the barrel was it just a matter of running a 308 reamer into a 375 barrel ?

Out of interest, the little 308 case necked up 375 leaves a small shoulder,

-necked up to 416 (nice intermediate size :D ) takes away all the shoulder creates a straight wall with pretty much standard 308 case taper (would have to headspace on case mouth)

-458 is a no can do/ difficult, as the proj is larger than the rim...

I'd post the cad-mock-up, but my colour choices are not 'appreciated' :)

btw, theyve probably all been done many times and called different things... 375 Superdooper perhaps, 416littlebanger :unknown:

That's the exact same thing I think when people redesign cartridge's to shoot 10gn bullets at 5000fps at rabbits 1000m away

Truth is,I like big bore rifles, but I've got a 22lr budget. I already own a 22/250,223,22 mag,17hmr,2 22lr,3 12g shotguns,a 50cal muzzleloader, and this 308. I like the idea of casting my own bullets. I find it rare to shoot anymore than 100m when hunting animals. I like the idea of running a heavy pure lead slug at subsonic speeds,a soft varmint style "light" bullet at mid range for medium game, and a heavy solid for big animals. I already have the rifle and dies, shells and powder. So in my mind,if all I have to do is modify my dies, buy some projies, and get a new barrel to achieve something a bit unique to cover the larger end of the spectrum, well why not ?

here's the rifle in question topped with a leupold vari x lll 1.5-5x20. Just imagine it with a shorter barrel and express sights :-)

I'm keen on the .338 Fed i do like some ability for decent range but I'm curious as to how a .375-08 would perform no doubt inside 150-200 yards it would flat hammer piggies or anything for that matter with good projie selection.

Way I see it is as long as it doesn't drop more than 6 inches out to 200 its fine for anything bigger than a fox out to that range.

Just do it! Life's too short to look back and say I wish I had. A 375-08 is mild to shoot with a 200gr Sierra and kills Fallow stags emphatically and is cheap to shoot using 270gr Gas checked cast bullets.
