Novel new way to ruin reloads....... Part 1

Post by deadkitty » 22 Oct 2016, 7:46 am

I'm fairly new to reloading, but I thought I had all the basics pretty well sorted out, then a week or so ago I encountered a problem with bullet seating, where no two bullets were seated at the same depth. I posted my problem and had suggestions in reply to my questions from two nice gentlemen. So..... here's the embarrassing bit, I worked out what the problem was .. .. As I don't yet have a dedicated reloading bench, my press is bolted to a board that I can clamp (G clamps) to either the desk in my office or the workbench in the shed. Recently it's been clamped to the office desk and my lovely wife, needing to use said desk , removed it then reattached it after she'd finished, ( a fact I was unaware of), so...after all the drama I discovered that it had been clamped too close to said desk and the mechanics of the press was goughing into the edge at the bottom, result, no two bullets seated the same.... Cheers

I just do it all on the work bench in the man cave. Just drilled a couple of holes bolt the press in place. The trimmer goes in the vice. The positive is it forces me to tidy up when I want to reload.

I set the press up so it uses the full stroke to seat the projectile, pretty easy to feel it hasn't gone full stroke.
How's my posting?

Yep,normally works that wat Brett, but it was touching into the desk edge pretty dammed close to the botton of the stroke.... didn't do much for the edge of the pretty desk either.... oh well, I live and learn...usually the hard way  Cheers
