45/70 reloading

Post by Member-Deleted » 20 Nov 2013, 9:03 am

So I'm looking at getting a pedersoli sharps, but my bank account and partner disagree with me.
But when all the stars align I'm looking at reloading, about time as I went from having only 22's and other small rimfire and shotguns to a 303, 30-30, 243 and hopefully soon a 45/70 so there would be money to save.
So a few questions, I'd be looking at casting my own 30-30 and 45 slugs, and I recall reading of a hardening agent added to the lead of which the name has long escaped me, but is this an option or a requirement?
Now I would also want to be using BP for the 45/70, which is well and good for the rifle I'm looking at, but could I use it for 30-30 rounds? (the rifles a winchester 94 made in 1984 in that changes things)
And last off all how much is your standard modern powder and black powder; also is there really the variety in your BP as there is with modern powder?
Appreciate any help here guys,

I can sympathize with you on the bank account/ partner thing . As far as using BP in the Winchester you'd have to track down some load info for it but I don't think it would be the best idea. Smokeless powder performs better and cleaner than BP. Cost will vary depending on who you deal with, a 500g tin of ADI powder can be anywhere from $45-53 depending on where I go to shop. Also you'll get a discount if you can afford to buy in bulk.

The BP in the winchester would be purely a fun, just cos I can sort of thing, so it's not a problem if I can't anyway.
Thanks

It's probably doable just don't think it would give great results. But in the name of fun go right ahead :D

Get a copy of LYMAN cast bullet handbook, everything you will need to know about casting for reloads.

I have a 45/70 Martini, I load both black and smokeless for that.

Yes you can cast for the 30/30, there are several grades of black powder, refer to the Lyman book for loads.

You will probably find a copy on Alibris.

Out of curiosity, once you work out a load that works well in smokeless, is there some sort of formula like XXgr of smokless powder type 1 = XXgr of black powder type 2?

Or do you have to work up 2 loads from scratch?

I have never seen a conversion table for black to smokeless loads. Most of the black powder cases I have seen were designed to use a full case

of black powder,ie 45/70 a real challenge getting 70 grains in there.Go to ADI site for smokeless loads in older cases,Yes I worked up loads for both

powder types, BE SAFE
