Firing a cartridge with no powder

Post by tiki » 20 Nov 2013, 2:18 pm

Hi guys,

Just a curious one here - If you were reloading and somehow manage to prime a case and seat the bullet without loading any powder, what would happen if you fired it?

Is a primer just a spark or does it have enough oomph to launch a bullet at all?

Usually the primer is just enough to push the projectile out of the barrel and not much further.

My guess would be, worst case scenario would be a stuck projectile smoewhere down the spout and perhaps some dammage to your pride ....unless you go for the next shot without checking for an obstruction, then she would get pretty serious.

Enough to push it up the barrel so it's wedged in tight, read a story about it a few years ago in shooter magazine and the guy tried to push it out with another round and blew his gun to peices, he found his new swavoski scope about ten metre away and his gun was obliterated. Luckily he fired it with a peice of string around the trigger and was a few metres back

Another reason to be serious about shooting,

Pay attention when shooting, be aware incase the rifle goes pop instead of BANG.

As already said it probably will push a projectile out of a small calibre, but unless you're sure it actually hit something,
YOU MUST CHECK. One proj trying to push another proj out of a barrel will almost certainly result in a bulged barrel or blown barrel.

If it happens, insert your cleaning rod to see how far it went down the barrel, then tap it out.

I have seen it happen a couple of times with rifles, each time the projectile was stuck up the barrel, the first time a tap with a cleaning rod dislodged it from the lands, the second time it had to be drilled out(long process and story).

Very common with pistols loaded on multistage presses(when the powder thrower fails to drop a charge or is half worked) and the user has to be very sharp sometimes to not to fire another shot as it can destroy the gun.

Recognising a misfire and what to do next is very important especially if you have a double action revolver.

LMAO.

Intentionally trying to knock it out by firing another bullet into it. Genius...

That can be the new longarms safety course.

They just hand you a rifle with a bullet stuck in the barrel, give you a cartridge and say "Do with this as you will" and leave you to it.

If you haven't blown yourself up 30 seconds later, you pass

Yep.

A cleaning rod down the muzzle end can usually knock out modest jams without any harm to your rifle though.

Be it for a primer/bullet combo or a stuck case.
See you on the firing line.

Go and get a Kinetic bullet puller to remove the projectile from the case. Once the pill is removed, you may be able to resize it without touching the primer.
Else, get a universal decapping die and press the live primer out. Be careful though, just push it nice and easy with the same force your pressed it in.

reload as per normal.
