Yeah I thought it was coz they can shoot through material, you know t-shirts, curtains, skirts and undies and stuff!

Casting can become addictive as you are in control of the quality of your own bullets.

Between then and now - from 44 mold, to 12ga slug, 45-70 and MH 577-450. Addictive in deed. Next I am thinking 329 mold (most likely), another 44 and 45-70 mold.

Well, got off my arse and prepped a few 30-06 cases yesterday. Today loaded up 20 test rounds with 130gr pills from 49 to 51gr AR2208.

These are intended for dogs, fallow & reds in my Winchester. Just waiting for the scope to arrive.

Probably boring s**t for most, but thought I would at least look like I'm doing something.

The Marlin, my deer rifle takes 180gr. So as I had spare 3006 seemed sensible to make good use of it. Cheaper than a new 7x57 or 7-08 + scope. Still over gunned but what the hell.

PS, 49gr might be enough.

Overgunned? No such thing. Does sound like an excellent combination though. It'd be interesting to see what velocities it gets. 130 over 49gr of 2208 sounds like a very fast moving projectile.

Max 53.5gr. = 3154fps
So I loaded from 49gr at 0.5 steps. 4 of each for testing.
Less a tad for 22" barrel.

This rifle (Winchester 70) used to love 180gr bullets but I bought the Marlin because it was lighter. (but wasn't as light as claimed) Getting lazy. The Winchester will be used for flat land only.

I’ve recently had a lot of bad influence and developed somewhat of a warm fondness for 12ga slugs. Slugs are expensive though.

I do have a Lee shotgun shell all in one press thing. However, that requires individual components and I just can’t be bothered… Soon, soon. Not yet though. Then Bentaz and someone else (my apologies, I don’t remember who it was) suggested that I can just swap shot for slug in sporting shells. And really, I don't even need to crimp. Though in a tube mag, I thought I would.

I’ve already shot it all and it works very well, but I thought I’d share the road to Sluglife.

Purchased a roll crimper from Mother Russia. It got lost in mail and I got a very prompt no questions asked refund. However, disappointed, I liked that one. Plan B – ordered one locally. This one is plastic, one from RU was alloy, which I thought was very cool. Anyway...





These are my first attempts. Basically, cut the top of the shell off, pour out the shot, pop a Lee 7/8 slug in and roll crimp on drill press at 500RPM. This is as low as I could go, however instructions suggest lower.


f***ed up bad, but as Homer would say, it's still good, it's still good...


Too much friction, I am like that... Melted the top pretty bad.


Getting there, but very messy and doesn't look good at all.

As you can see, YouTube is not always correct. I watched a few videos and I just couldn't put my finger on it.

Upon inspection, his excellency Bentaz the Shotgunner saw my handy work and after a few adjectives it was suggested that I am going in dry and need to lubricate. So Innox to the rescue. Sprayed a little on the base of the drill press (also acts as rust inhibitor for the press), dipped my finger in it and rubbed some on the mouth of the shell, before it went into roll crimper. Or as Myth Busters would say, "with enough lubrication, you can achieve anything".

Took it a lot slower this time… I also knew how the resistance on the handle should feel at certain points of the crimping process and the 'wrong' and 'right' sounds. I suspect lack of lubrication (above) is responsible for most of the mess.

And here they are, slugs v2.0. Pretty happy.



I made about 50 of them (new) and made sure to grab a random sample, so I am pretty happy with consistency. Not a bad way of turning a $7 box of sporting shells into slugs.

Interesting observation... I held the shell down with pliers. I also considered making a jig, but after pliers that went out the window. It's very hard to 'feel' what's going on, when I wasn't holding on to the shell. Once I just held on to it, I knew exactly when I needed to stop.

Sungazer, all shells in photos were cut the same way. Just a sharp knife along the edge to pop the top off.

That mess, that's all me and roll crimp thing spinning way too fast and getting pushed down way too hard.

OB, we've been through this. It has to look good, shiny, polished, etc. to shoot well. This has been covered in a lot of detail on this forum, with a lot of data to back this up. there have been numerous studies and papers published on the topic. Addressing ballistics and muzzle velocity; and how they relate to shiny and good looking ammo. While being negatively impacted by messy things covered in carbon, etc.

Cooked up a batch fresh off the press..

Lapua brass, 140gr Nosler cc, fed 210 primer with a pinch of 2209 seasoned to taste.
Best served hot.

Alrighty, dipping my toes into adventures in the land of Trail Boss and had some free time today, seeng that hipster inspired me to do some reloading. No, that came out wrong... Because he had shoulder holsters and this is a gun forum...

Using one of this little things (https://leeprecision.com/mold-dc-459-500-3r.html) - 500gr of goodness.


Made up a dummy round. Chambers. Good. Ejected. Good. Removed the bullet and marked the case, just below seating depth. I am getting 15gr maximum load.

Trimmed everything to the same length and went to town. Loaded a few at 10.5gr (at 70%) of TB and then jumped to 12.5, which still gave a lot of room below the bullet.

Should be fun!

Work in progress. This was interesting. I had to back the die out quite a bit and then move the seating stem almost all the way to the top. I applied lite crimp to remove the flare, I had to remove the seating stem for that. Took me by surprise.

Other lessons learned. TB - fantastic powder to work with. I used a thrower and had to tap the side on up and down strokes of the handle, otherwise I would get inconsistent throws. However, throwing with a scoop is really consistent and I almost had the right combination of scoops. I did trickle some in. So I gave up after loading the 70% rounds and setup the thrower. I just couldn't be arsed doing that 35 times.


Tadaaaa! 40 rounds of awesome. Now I need some baby dinosaur zombies coming at me.

A beautiful clean tidy reloading desk. Tidy desk tidy mind. My Reloading room Desk I try to keep organized and tidy but the tidy bit gets smaller and smaller and kinda gets into a bit of a shambles or at least mess : Nice work lots of porn been happening in that room.

I just use my general work bench in the cave. So have to clear it every time I do a bit of reloading.
