These two pics are of the bullets I use in my 1871 built Husqvarna (Swedish) rolling block .50-70 rifle. The "redesigned" one was recovered from our club's bullet trap. The other is of course fresh from casting and measures .515.
The fired one is not only barrel swaged down to .506 and hexagonal, but curiously stretched as well! You can clearly see it's taller than the fresh bullet. It has lost no weight at all.
Now you'd think that a bullet that's so bashed around wouldn't hit the proverbial but it'll shoot a 4 shot, 2.3 inch group at a measured hundred yards.
There's still a few of Wile. E Coyote's ideas that I haven't tried yet.

The wonders of ballistics.
It'll shoot the fleas off a dog's back at five hundred yards, Tannen, and it's pointed straight at your head!

Never seen them made taller, that is interesting.

Hey Noisy, sorry to rehash an old thread, but swaging down from .515 to .506. That lead has to go somewhere, hence the lengthening? Have you tried sizing them to the bore? Looks like the rifling is in great nick!

Rehash away. I size them down to .510 once they're pan lubed. Yes the lead has gotta go somewhere and that's why I cast these bullets from pure lead (.515 450 gn Lee mold)
When shooting from cross sticks and letting the rifle float with loose (ish) grip, I can actually feel the rifle twisting in my hands a little from the torque of the bullet rotating in the 3 foot long barrel and that's another curious thing with this one - its shoots better that way and scores in the top 2 consistently at the 200 yard event. The black powder gods work in mysterious ways!
When shooting smokeless you just don't encounter weird and interesting stuff like you do shooting smokeful powder.

What's the deal with the rifling in the gun?

It's straight? :unknown:

Yes it's a Middling rate of twist at 1:36. Round ball muzzle loaders are typically 1:60 and even 1:72 sometimes.

1:36?

Doesn't seem like it would do stuff all?

Does plenty. Only need a fast twist with inherently unstable projectiles

It's not a match hollow point, doesn't need much spin to do it's work.
