casting slugs

Post by pete1 » 04 Jan 2017, 6:28 pm

So was wondering how many people cast and load there own shotgun slugs? I dont intend to do it myself, as i don't have any of equipment or shoot enough to make it worth while, just curious.

I do;
I get bronze wing trap shot, blue in colour, as their wad has no reinforced veins, I cut the top off with a prep tool and insert a Lee 7/8 ounce slug in it I cast myself from wheel weights and pure lead. Its very accurate, low recoil, cartwheels animals... Its also dirt cheap. If your local I can make you a box...

I use the Lee 7/8 ounce slug mold. Very accurate hits hard in a smooth bore barrel. Can only use open or improved choke though nothing narrower.

The right scrap joint will sell anything by the kg for a few $ per.

I haven't looked for lead specifically but price wise I know my local metals recycling price sells off cuts etc. of various metals for about $4 a kg.

I guess lead is the same.

I prefer to buy new lead.
You can buy a variety of bullet casting lead from Northern Smelters.
Or you can buy pure sheet lead from Bunnings, but it's expensive.
Or you can order lead shot in 10kg bags for about $9-10 per kilo.
Or you can buy bulk birdshot loads for about $100 per 250rds and pour the shot out of those as required. 250 1-oz shells gives you 15.625lb of nice hard lead - that's 109,000gn of bullets (nearly 2000 55gn .223 bullets). And you still have 250 primed and charged shells you can load with whatever you like.

Or, I spent two-and-a-half hours yesterday with the metal detector digging bullets out of the dam wall ;-)

Dear Santa,
Please bring me a Desert Tactical Arms SRS-A1 Rifle in .338 Lapua Magnum.
I'll be good with it, I promise!

I can see why you can't wait, that doesn't sound at all comfortable!

I loaded 2 back to back .357 140g bullets in 3 inch .410 shotshells and they were crap. They just fell out the end.The cylinders I launched out of the 12g were much more effective.Being a plumber meant I had lots of lead and copper pipe so I poured lead into 16mm copper pipe and then cut in to 16mm long cylinders.casting proper ball seems a much better idea
