Post by AZZA'S HJ47 » 21 Jan 2017, 7:39 pm

So decided to try some RCBS dies for my yet to be seen 223 rifle bought some projectiles, powder, primers and brass had some lunch started on some case prep. And then it stuck me RCBS dont include shell holders. Rung back gun shop apparently they dont sell and have never stocked shell holders for 223. Am i the only one that finds this odd???

Funny Gunshop. Never heard of one that didn't have any brand/type of shell holder if they stock other stuff like Dies. Think I'd give them a miss in future.

Buy Online.

BTW The Shell Holders I would buy anywhere in order of what I believe is the best quality are ... Redding, RCBS, Lyman, Lee. That not only goes for a good fit on the case head but also the correct thickness for a standard die. Redding also make Competition Shell Holders and a kit that has various thickness one's to make things a bit easier when bumping back case shoulders if you are that fussy.

Best of luck.

That's about right, I had to get shell holders for both 223 and 308 when I bought rcbs dies, although you should be able to use other brand shell holders to the same effect. I use an rcbs shell holder with a set of lyman dies with no problems.

Ordered one online just seems odd that the biggest gun shops on the southside wouldn't have anything in any brand

PS....

Some Die Sets come with and some without Shell Holders. It varies between brands, maybe if they are a Deluxe Set or a Basic even with Lee. I forget as it's been many a year since I purchased any sort of Die Set. Shell Holders I have any number of brands for the same case calibre, whatever is handy but for the precision stuff I always rat out the box and find a Redding one. Knurled around the outside, so the Lyman might be too. But they fit tighter in the press and case head.

If they've literally "never" stocked them that's just stupid.

You need a shell holder, period.

.223 is common as.

No reason not to.

That shop sounds really light on! Even here the small dealers with little stock in the reloading department carry a 223 she'll holder.

A note on shell holders, not necessarily a good idea to mix and match brands when FLR cases. Generally you set the die so it contacts the shell holder and "cams-over" to complete the process. I've had issues where the case holder was slightly thinner and managed to stuff a few cases before working out the root cause (I think it was a RCBS die / Lee shell holder combo). I've also had the opposite happen and had issues using brass in a different rifle as the shoulder hadn't been set back enough. Redding and RCBS seem to be very close in measurements but the Lee can be different.

Spot on there Brett

RCBS shell plate ordered

Didnt notice any issues when FLR however when bullet seating it would crush the case regardless of how i adjusted the die. Got the job done however a RCBS shell plate is on the way

Mostly, just so long as you use the same one every time, once it is adjusted it shouldn't be a problem.
