45-70 + Trailboss

Post by Mick280 » 04 Feb 2017, 10:58 am

G'Day Guys!!
I'm looking for a mild to medium hunting load ( around 1500 fps ) using Trailboss and 405 gn hardcast projectiles.
I use these components for single action and plinking up to the 13 gn max load listed in the ADI Manual.
Would anyone be able to help me out with a rough max load that I would be able to work south from to achieve what I'm after?
Thanks
Mick.

Looking at ADI's data I can't see you making 1500fps out of Trailboss.
If 13gn makes 1000fps, you need about 21.5gn to make 1500fps.
32gn of AR2207 looks more suitable.

I have a spreadsheet that lets me calculate charges, and it works very well.

You could be right there mate!
I don't think I'd have any trouble fitting 21 gn's into the case but I think there would be a pressure issue ( 40000 CUP max )
I just want to stay below that line where you need to start using gas checks!!
Thanks
Mick.

I took the 86 up to the range this morning!
I settled on 31 gn's of 2207 ( Thanks Bladeracer )
After 3 or 4 warm ups and a minor sight adjustment,I'm very happy with the result!!
Target was shot offhand at 50m.
MOAnything big enough to hurl 405 gn's at I'd say and very comfortable to shoot!!!
Mick.
