22 250 bullet seating depth

Post by Wonga » 13 Feb 2017, 5:34 pm

Hi all
Im new to reloading and have just started reloading for my model 70 22 250.
My COAL touching the lands is 61.83mm the maxium is 59.69mm.
Where do i stand when it comes to jump and coal when seating projectiles?
Im using hornady 52gr A max projectiles.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Me personally I have always ignored coal of cartridges. I find were the bullet just touches the lands now you have a true max length of your chamber. I then back off 20thou and then start testing. Now if you change bullets you will need to do the process again.
Some bullets don't mind jump and then there are some that don't handle it.
I'll then do a ladder test using my chosen combinations with varies charge weights to find the accuracy nodes. Then proceed to fine tune the load I only start playing with seating depths to really fine tune. Just be careful when you start seating the bullet out close to the lands as your chamber pressure will start to increase dramatically you then may need to tweek the powder charge down.

Personally i start my load development on the lands. Find my "best load" and then continue testing by shooting 3 groups of 5 in 5thou increments out from the lands. I usually only go out to 20-30 thou. This gives me satisfactory ammo of well under MOA in both my 223 and 7-08.

The COAL specs are a guide, not an absolute.

COAL will be different with every type of bullet, sometimes greatly.

See here for clear explanation already. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=3307#p42946

Personally I wouldn't take it back the extra 2mm just to get it "in spec".

Just off the lands is generally found to be best. 5 or 10 though off, even if that's a bit longer than stated COAL.

Which if you've got a Tikka, for example, is almost always shorter than your chamber can take.
