Max weight for 1:9 twist .223

I'm going to be getting a .223 in the new year and after doing a bit of research the rifle I chose has a 1:9 twist. After reading around I know it's the length of the projectile that determines whether a barrel's twist will stabilize it but everyone talks in weight of projectile cos it's easier and more common.

Anyway, my question is what's the heaviest projectile that you guys have had stabilize in a 1:9 .223? Anyone who's used VLD projectiles would be helpful too.

About 70 grain - with a grain here or there maybe depending on the bullet.

As reference, for Sierra 77gr HPBT Matchkings they need a 1:8 twist.

For 90gr HPBT Matchkings they need a 1:6.5 twist.

Sub 70gr sounds right.

You're right, length is the key issue.

Obviously you can't make a bullet wider to make it heavier or it wouldn't be the same calibre, so it has to get longer instead.

Everyone refers to twist and weight (often incorrectly and/or because they don't really understand) but yeah, bullet length is key.

Dont forget bullets with different ogive can have the same weight but different length too.

A 70gr in bullet X may be significantly different to a 70gr in bullet Y.
