Using softer tumbler media

Post by Grrzrr » 23 Feb 2017, 10:47 am

Just wondering what everyone's experience is with softer tumbler media.

I've been using regular nut shell type media for a while and it's fine.

What's the story with softer media like corn cob?

I got a pretty average explanation from the guy at my LGS that it "cleans less" that harder media which obviously doesn't make much sense... Like you'd ever want your brass less clean than harder media can do

Lay some info on me.

I use corn cob routinely. It's awesome and seems easier to get than the walnut shell stuff. However, the main reason for switching was I was totally over having the walnut shell treatment getting into everything. The red treatment is jeweler's rouge (fine red-iron oxide) and it can be hard to get rid of.

I've cleaned thousands of rounds in both media types and there is no practical difference between the two in terms of cleaning capacity and they both get stuck in the flash hole.

If you want your brass to be super shiny - add a cap-full of nu-finish car wax to your corn-cob media. This brings the shine up really nice and you don't get the finger-print marks on your cases from handling during reloading.

I'm sorry but shiny brass won't shoot any better....if only.

That would be pretty helpful if it wasn't the opposite of what he was asking about
