Lee 1 oz slug load problem

Post by Oldbloke » 26 Mar 2017, 4:11 pm

Started to load some Lee 1oz slugs today. Wad Collum is not right obviously. Is difficult to crimp then goes too far. I'm using a 1oz wad. Any ideas?

Tried that. Perhaps a bit more experimenting is needed. Must be more critical than loading shot.

I think the wad collapsed when crimping due to slightly too long a wad collum .
Will cut one open and have a look.
If this is correct I think the fix will be 32 gram (instead of 28 gram ) wads with cardboard ones to get it just right. Might have a look after work.

Looks like the wad has collapsed. Perhaps a combination of cheapo wad and the wad being a tad too long. The powder load is far from high, so not that.

I will try a 32 gram wad at the weekend and see how that works. I may need 1 or 2 cardboard wads under the slug and trim the fingers a bit but should work then.

Just a follow up. I seem to have fixed the problem. The original wad column was a bit too long and when I crimped it the wad collapsed. It was essentially forced down in order to crimp.

I have now used a 32 gram wad which left the projectile a tad too low. (Lee recommends prior to crimping the slug should be 7/16" from the top of the shell)
I trimmed the petals about 3 mm and placed a cardboard wad under the slug to get the height just right. (slug is now 7/16" from top of shell) Result nice crimp. Each load was 21 gr AS50N

Moral of the story. Read the instruction manual. ;) I will now load up a few over the weekend to test.

Improved cylinder in an old single barrel. . But I'm yet to test them. It's my first crack at loading solids. I'll load up 3 of each load 20, 21, & 22 grains of AS50N for around 1200fps

That seems to be the best for solids.I launched all my homemade solids out the greener with a full choke and they went good

Wads are just Winchester 32g wads. Nothing special. Had them for yonks.

Got home to night and the crimp still looks OK.

Yep that's what I'm using. The one I loaded a few days ago looked like the crimp might start to un-crimp. So I loaded three more using the same wad but thinner cardboard wad under the slug. It crimped better too. Looks like the wad column height is fairly critical unlike when you load shot.

I will only get 1200fps at best. Crimp still looked OK today. Expect to try them in a few days.
If I reduce by one card I might squeaze in another grain or two. See how these go first.

What exactly are you planning on using them for? I was going to get a 1 ounce mould but I need to actually have a reason (game type and distance) also is the improved cyclinder 1/2 choke? I only know chokes by there fraction.

I am using a 12 gauge as a camp gun. Slugs r for pigs or deer close range. The beauty of a shotgun is you can use it for heaps of game provided the range is short and you have the right ammo..
Improved Cylinder is quarter choke.
