Just a follow up. I seem to have fixed the problem. The original wad column was a bit too long and when I crimped it the wad collapsed. It was essentially forced down in order to crimp.
I have now used a 32 gram wad which left the projectile a tad too low. (Lee recommends prior to crimping the slug should be 7/16" from the top of the shell)
I trimmed the petals about 3 mm and placed a cardboard wad under the slug to get the height just right. (slug is now 7/16" from top of shell) Result nice crimp.
Each load was 21 gr AS50N

Moral of the story. Read the instruction manual. I will now load up a few over the weekend to test.
